"LINKAGES... TOWARD THE POSSIBLE"
Reprint of Acceptance Speech29th National
Gait House East,From the Desk of the National President
Patricia Russell-McCloud, J.D.
Eleventh National President
The Links, Incorporated
Madam Presidents, Executive Council and Committee
members, present and past, to the members of The Links
Incorporated, Connecting Links, Heir-O-Links, Family and
Friends ...
Now is the moment to begin! Surely, we are awed and
humbled by your trust, support and belief in the possible.
We are cognizant of the challenge, and commited to the
undertaking.
We are mindful of those who precede us whose gifts,
talents and tasks, made us deservedly proud! We come
tonight inextricably bound one to the other. Yes, we know
that people need people. A single bracelet does not jingle.
Sticks in a bundle symbolize a unit, or umoja. One stick
... blows away in the wind. Bound to others ... it stays in
place. Synergy is a manifestation of the reality that one
plus one does not equal two; one plus one side by side
can equal eleven or more.
No one achieves alone, or becomes alone, and no one
thrives alone. Rather it is the recognition that some cleared
the way to make a path. Our potential is realized through
participation, each one brings her talents, best efforts and
their will to find a way. Some stepped back so that we
could step forward. Some turned barriers into benchmarks,
and gave new meaning to the phrase "Together, we can!"
The writer has stated, "No man is an island." The truth
is, no woman is either. It is quite an admission that
phenomenal women still need linkages whether at the
national, area or local levels. There have been those who
served as a sister mentor. Those who uniquely share their
wit and wisdom; those who have been there in times of joy
and in the difficult moments to keep us steady and steadfast
through it all.Assembly
Louisville, KYIn my life in Linkdom, and beyond - that person is Link
Dr. Dolly Desselle Adams, the 8th National President. A
sister, mentor, a compass on a clear day when you can
see forever, and a guide in the time of storm. Thus, while
we address raising our sisterhood to new heights, we shall
be wise enough and appreciative enough to recognize the
high heights we have already reached, mountains we have
already climbed, and the quagmire of competing essen-
tials we have already addressed. We also acknowledge
loving families that have understood, when the great room
became a Link workroom and telephone lines became a
Links' line.
It is ours, to move past the statement of the problem. It
is ours to move beyond the plan for addressing the prob-
lem. We shall reveal our powers of observation and
analysis, and move past our astuteness in assessing the
situation; and, move past our insights as to cause and
effect. It will be ours to act. Recognizably, talking out a
thing is not the same as fixing it. Our focus must be solving
problems, not re-stating them. To have envision ... to see
beyond, that which we see.
It shall be ours to have linkages . . . with like-minded
individuals, groups and associations who are willing to
walk towards, rather than walk away from. While others
are held hostage by negative statistical data and a ques-
tionable belief in their respect for themselves or others, we
must believe in ourselves, and those whom we serve.
People need people, the songwriter insists . . . the
homeless, hopeless, the positioned and the poverty
stricken. Accordingly, we will have an initiative in health
and wellness to make health a habit. As women we will
speak for ourselves whether in the areas of medical
research or health reform. We will speak in collective voices
for our well-being.
The Links will be there in education, helping youth to
establish and maintain a standard of excellence without(Continued on next page)
