on his rights, as a magistrate, to be
heard. [Loud applause.] The Lo'rd

Nottage said, "The Lord Mayor hac
been pleased to sHV that he would
scorn to take profit out of such in-
decent stuff." The Lord Mat or re-
turning, ordered the court cleared.
A scene of. wild confusion and tu
mult, with groans and cheers fol-

you decline to hear he, and you are
supposed to be dispensing justice
from that Scat. I impeach you in the
name of the citizens of London with
having brought discredit on yotar
olfice, and, withhaving viyjaiod a
duty which belongs to that ancient
chair." The court was then cleared,
amidst gioans, hisses, and cries of
"shame," and great uproar and ex-
citement.
London. Oct. 30.—a crowd of
about four hundred people assem-
bled outside of the Mansion House
to-day and hooted at the Lord
Mayor on his departure for Guild
Hall.
Matters at Memphis.
Memphis, Oct. 29.—The How-
ards have relieved all but fifty-three
of th^-ir nurses. Four bundled ab-
sentees returned by train to-night.
Memphis Oct. 30.—No new cases
"i" deaths have been reported since
yesterday. The weather has again
tin ncd cold.
Night.—Two cases of yellow fever
vveie teported this afternoon—Al-
fred Goldsmith and John Lenkenet.
Both have been active workers
thoiighout the present epidemic.
The weather remains very cold to-
day. Thermometer ranged between
49 and 6S.
Memphis Oct. 30.—The national
board ol health will, during the
month of November, begin a sanita-
ry survey of the city, which work
will be supervised t>y Colonel War-
ing anil \V. H. Bengaured, as soon
as the absentees have a 1 returned.
Inspection will be made by the na-
tional board with a view to ascer-
taining wl.at is needed in ths way
of proper sanitary improvement.
This woik will be completed about
the 25 th of November, and the re-
sults will be submitted to Dr. J. S.
liiilings, vice president, and Doctors
Johnson and m'tcheJI,, members of
the national board, and Dr. Foltz-
som, ot Boston, who will visit the
city at the period named. A test of
Wolf river anil cistern water will be
made by Dr. Smith, surgeon in the
United States army. A survey of
the city will be made, in compliance
with the request of the taxing dis-
trict government.
Severe Storm.'
Hai.ihax, Oct. 30.—The storm of
yesterday was felt severely in the
eastern portion of the province. At
Port Mulgrave a terrific hurricane
from the east raged all the morning,
doing much damage to buildings
and wharves. Several schooners
went ashore, one at Cape Jack light.
Several buildings were blown down.
Such a severe storm was never ex-
perienced before in that section. At
Port Hastings scarcely a building
was left uninjured. A number ol
buildings were blown down at Co-
ruso Cove and Point Richmond.
Much damage was also done at oth-
er points. •
More Disastrous Floods m Spam.
Mauid, Oct. 30.—There have
been heavy rains throughout the en
tire country. At Malaga a water-
spout uprooted trees atld injured
mat y persons. At Vera, in Almeria,
the river overflowed and flooded the
mines, throwing 1500 men out of
work. Twenty-one nersons were
drowned. Thirty houses were car-
ried away. At Caevas several lives
were lost and„ one house was de-
stroyed. Marauders are taking ad-
vantage of the disaster by plunder
ing the property. The Seragossa
and Barcelona Railway is submerg-
ed for a distance of sixteen kilome-
tres. ,
The Boston police commissioners,
in whom is vested the power of li-
censing shows in that city, have de-
cided to permit no performances by
children.
, Five years ago I was visiting the
family ol a retired army officer They
had purchased a larm near Quaker-
town, Pennsylvania, not lar from
the farm owned by Fletche-, the
actor. We frequently in 0111 drives
caught sight of the actor and Lizzie
Price, and the neighborhood was
full of stories in regard to Fletcher's
eccentricities. After returning Irom
our drive and taking supper, we
would gather around the center ta-
ble in the parlor and chat about
many things. Often the . conversa-
tion turned on President and Mrs.
Grant. >VTlre' now. retiitd general
had been Grant's senior officer i*nd
his wile wiU one of Mrs'. Grant's
bridesmaids. The friendship be-
tvveen the four had been of long
standing. I was shown the origi-
nal article ol co-partnership between
the general and Grant When they

But the profits did not justify the
keeping of the billiard saloon, and
the place was given hp, Grant falling
buck upon his father in-law'* farm
near St. Louis, where his wife and
son resided. He made himself u*e
ful to old Mr. Dent by driving to
town on the loads of wood which he
took to market for sale. And now,
behold the spectacle of a man wiio
failed to keep a successful billiard sa-
loon receiving the honors of the
great potentate and the most cele-
brated hero of the age! Strange ate
the mutations of foitune. The glit-
ter ot gold still dazzles, and we are
prone to invest the most stolid, most
inanimate objects with goditke at-
tributes. Most of the world's idols
are the commonest of clay, and, as
Bob Ingersoll says, every man makes
his own God or worships the image
of his own creation.
The Ohio river at Louisville is
lower than ever known before.
There aie but two feet of water at
many points and the falls present a
bleak and barren appearance. Usu-
ally the river is a mile and a quarter
wide at L> uisville, but now the
stream is not to exceed half a mile
wide and on the rapids is but a
creek.
