Notes

"Identity of the men is unknown. The A. B. Mandelstamm sign on the building in the background indicates that the load of logs was photographed in Frankston, because Mandelstamm operated a store in Frankston several years after he left Jacksonville in the early 1920's. Mandelstamm and L. E. Frank, a relative, operated the Frank and Mandelstamm dry goods firm at Main and Commerce Sts. in Jacksonville several years. The two teams of mules were a standard motive power for hauling logs to sawmills in those days before trucks took over the task. The load is rather light for four mules, but the wagon is about the right size for the load. Often, loggers would have three and four teams to a load on the sturdier wagons, many of which were eight and twelve-wheelers for the larger loads. Mandelstamm became wealthy from the early development of the Carey Lake Oil Field on the Neches River west of Jacksonville and southwest of Frankston, where he owned large tracts of land. The Mandelstamm company closed years ago."
