Thirty four Albany High School
seniors will graduate Friday, May
29, at 8:00 p.m in the AHS Audi
torium.
During commencement exer
cises, recipients of 21 scholar
ships totaling $12,850 will he
named.

mony is former AHS Principal L.
B. Gibson of Albany.
Principal Rueben Gillespie will
present awards to the graduates,
and AISI) Trustee Gerald F'etree
will present the diplomas.
Class President Leigh Heatly
will give the invocation, and
special music will be provided by
Sara Maxey and Randall Palmore
Carolyn Hill will serve as
pianist.
A reception honoring the 34
graduates will be held following
the commencement ceremony at
the Old Jail Art Center.
Senior students interested in
receiving a scholarship had to ap
ply to the various clubs, churches
and organizations by May 8.

AHS athletes honored Saturday

Several memorial aw ards along
with Most Valuable Player
Awards were handed out to
Albany High School athletes
Saturday night, May 23, during
the annual All-Sports Banquet
held at the Nancy Smith Elemen
tary Cafeteria.
The awards banquet, which is
sponsored by the Albany Booster
Club, is held each year to
recognize the outstanding
athletes in each individual sport.
Memorial awards given in
memory of past Albany athletes
and fans are presented to deserv
ing boy and girl athletes for their
special contributions to the
athletic program

given to the students who you

Award for courage and deter
mination was presented to Brad
Patterson, a senior, and
sophomore tiina Chapman
Rodney Brow ning. a senior, and
Kim Cauhle. a junior were given
the Ben Carlile Hustler Award for
1986 87 The award is presented
to the athletes who display the
most hustle and enthusiasm."
A new memorial award was
presented this year at the request
of the graduating class of 1979.
The first recipients of the Rob
Shack Fighting Heart Award
were Richard WTade and
Elizabeth Pittman. Wade is a
senior, while Pittman is a junior.
West moland stated that the
award will be given annually to
the athletes who demonstrate the
most courage and dedication.
"I thought the banquet went
very well," said Tommy Dittmar,
Athletic Director and Head
Coach. "It was a great ending to a
great year and we are expecting
even greater things next year."

The coaches of each sport
presented their entire earn at the
banquet and gave a brief recap of
the season.
In girls basketball, West-
moland presented the MVP
and the most valuable offensive
player awards to senior Rolanda
Vickers. Vickers was named first
team all district and will be play
ing in a special state-wide all-star
game this summer.
The most valuable defensive
player in girls basketball went to
BranDee Pate, a junior.
Rodnev Browning was also
honored as MVP for boys basket
ball by Coach Denney Faith.
Tennis coach Carolyn Hill
stated that she was "very proud
of all her kids this year.'' The boys
and girls varsity and JV teams
swept all four district titles with
two doubles teams advancing to
regional.
The MVP awards in tennis
were given to the girls doubles
team of Alma Schkade, freshman,
and Chanel Riley, sophomore.
Also. Jeff Maves, a junior, and
Kevin Hill, sophomore, in the
boys division. The two teams both
w on first in district.

track was awarded to state cham

the Bill Webb Memorial Student
Fund.
The valedictorian will recpive
the Rev. J A. Owen Scholarship
in the amount of $400, while the
salutatorian will receive th< Bill
Webb Scho arship in the amoun
of $200.
Ricia Petree, daughter of Mr
and Mrs. (ierald Petree was
named valedictorian. F'etree had a
96.78 grade average
Richard Wade, son of Mr and
Mrs. Dwain Wade was chosen as
salutatorian for his grade point of
95.
Other honor students include

son, Cheryl Cauhle and Magda
Delgado Ramos.
The senior class chose red and
gray as the class colors Red and
white carnations are the class
flowers.

The Albany Chamber of Com
merce Board of Directors voted to
appoint Ed Tackett as interim
Chamber Manager through July
15 during their monthly meeting
held last Thursday, May 21
Tackett is no stranger to the
Chamber of Commerce business
having served as Albany s
manager from September 1974 to
September 1976, Fie also was the
manager of the Lockhart
Chamber of Commerce for over a
year during 1976 77 before
returning to Albany to accept a
position with Jones Company.
Tackett stated that he plans to
open the local office from 9:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p m. on Tuesday through
Friday Fie is filling the vacancy
left when Chamber Manager
David Janca resigned on April 3
Janca is now employed by the
Colorado City Area Chamber of
< ommerce

that Albany and the Chamber
could benefit from Ed's leader
ship as Chamber manager

season when the Chamher office

Todd stated that the board has
also asked Tacket t to 'onsider ac
cepting the position in a perma
nen; basis, however Tackett
wished to complete i (rial period
before making a decision.
The Chamber board does plan

whether it be Tackett or someone
else in the near future
