Band awards given at concert
Senior hand student Ricia
Petree was the recipient of the
John Phillip Sousa Award during
the annual spring band concert
Thursday, May 21.
F'etree, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Gerald Fetree, won the
honor that is traditionally given
to the outstanding senior musi-
cian.
Kristen Kayga, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Steve Kayga, was the
recipient of the Louis Armstrong
Award for the "outstanding per
formance of jazz," according to
Director of Rands Larry Little
field.
The Director's Award was
given to the entire band. "Their
support and attitude when I came
back from my operation was
great," Littlefield said. "It was
only three weeks until contest,
and we came home with a Division
I in the concert contest. I received
support and love from the entire
band."
Awards were also given to the
outstanding girl and boy musi
cians in the fifth through eleventh
grades. Awards went to:

Chad McCoy,
• Sixth Grade Tammy Hen
derson and Keith '1 hompson,
• Seventh Tirade — Libby
Harlow and Johnnie Hudman,

BranDee Hate, who will be a
senior next fall, was selected as
head cheerleader for the 1987 88
school year during elections at Al
hany High School Friday.
Other varsity cheerleaders,
and their classifications, will in
elude Susan Hill, senior; Gina
Chapman and Christie Hudman,
juniors; and Melissa Compton,
sop homore.
Leann Bonner, who will be a
junior next year, was chosen as
the Lion mascot.
Next year's slate of junior var
sity cheerleaders will include
Laura Thompson, junior; Alma
Schkade, sophomore; and Kim
Bartee, Prairie Barker and Jen
nifer Norman, freshmen.
Libby Harlow, who is advanc
irig to eighth grade, will serve as
head junior high cheerleader.
Other junior high cheerleaders in
elude Susan Wilfong, eighth
grade; and Holly Harvick,
Heather Parsons and SanDee
Pate, seventh grade.
Cheerleaders are chosen by
popular vote.

OJAC to host art lecturer
Nicole M. Holland, vice
president of InterCultura, Fort,
Worth, will lecture on Italian
painting from the period
1300 1800 on Friday, June 5, at
4:00 p.m. at the Old Jail Art
Center.
Holland, a graduate of the
Courtauld Institute of Art in Lon
don, is an authority on the Italian
Renaissance. Her lecture will use
examples from The Old Jail Art
Center's upcoming exhibition,
Five Centuries of Italian Painting
IS00-1800 which opens June 6.
Prior to joining InterCultura,
an exhibition organizing group,
Ms. Holland was associated with
the Kimbell Museum as a curator.
While the lecture is primarily
to acquaint the 79 docents of the
Art Center with the Italian ex
hibition, Mrs. Holland will also
outline the history of Italian
painting and its effect on civiliza-
tion.

Robertson earns degree
Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie L. Robert
son of Albany and Ms. Merlene
Robertson of Carrollton proudly
announce the graduation of their
daughter, Stephani Rhea Robert-
son from the University of Texas
at Austin.
Stephani received her Bachelor
of Journalism degree on May 23,
1987, during morning ceremonies
held by the College of Commun
ication at the Erwin Center on the
UT Campus.
That evening graduation exer
cises were concluded for the
104th Graduating Class for all col
leges under the Texas Tower.
Guest speaker for the graduation
was Honorable Jim Wright,
Speaker of the House. The
ceremonies were closed by the
traditional lighting of the Texas
Tower in burnt orange, and the
singing of "The Eyes of Texas"
and "Texas Fight."
Officers report 7 arrests
The following arrests were
made by Shackelford County law
enforcement officers during the
past week.
An arrest is not necessarily an
indication of guilt, but is an action
taken by the state in response to
an alleged crime or complaint.
Included in the arrest records
were Roger A. Putnam, 43, traffic
warrants; Jose Rodrigo Rocha, 37,
DWI, driving with license
suspended; Tommy Trevino
Samapira, Jr., 31, possession of
marijuana less than 2 oz.; Robert
Charles Richardson, 38, DWI, 1st
offense; Zacharias Bryan Cook,
21, DPS warrant; Aaron Earl
Gilbreath, 28, probation revoca
tion; Paul Allan Douglas, 31, pro
bation revocation.
CORRECTION
In last week's issue of The
Albany News, the cost reported
to add a name to the American
Legion Memorial Monument in
the Albany Cemetery was incor
rect. The correct cost at this time
to add a name to the Memorial
Monument is $50 plus tax.
