HELLCAT NEWS
May 1997
and he tells me he is looking for about 85 or more troopers and
guests, so it sounds like a great time. Barb and I are also plan-
ning on going to the KIA Memorial at Fort Campbell. This will
be the completion, so to speak, of the work Ted and his com-
mittee started to do many months ago. He deserves the praise
of everyone of us for his staying with and completing this out-
standing task. After the Fort Campbell Memorial, Barb and I
are heading to Wisconsin to visit her son and his wife. From
there it will be a stop in Lafayette, IN, my home town, on our
way back to SC. If we decide we can take the time, we may still
come through Columbus, OH, on our way back home.
IN MEMORIAM: Harry Shkuratoff [D] died 1 February
1997, in the emergency room at Citizens General Hospital,
New Kensington, PA. Harry is survived by his wife Hedwig, a
son Harry Jr., three daughters, Mary Huffman, Cathy and
Linda, three granddaughters and a sister. We send our heart-
felt sympathy to his family and friends.
FROM THE MAILBAG: Boosters: Clyde Emert [HQ]; Nat
Barber [E]; and Dick Ruble [F], Dues Paid: Clyde Emert [HQ];
Nat Barber [E]; Marvin Dorff [E]; and Lloyd Sharkey [D].
Thanks very much to all of you and a special thanks to you
troopers for the boosters. Another thanks to Dick Ruble for
the donation to the Hellcat News. Dick also suggests that if
the association needs it, why not raise the dues $5.00. Another
thing, Dick, the Life Membership cost now is just $75.00.
Russell and Doris McCleary also made a donation to the
Hellcat News. Thanks folks.
Joe McCluggage [D] called to check on Barb and I told him I
needed letters so he sent a draft of things he had done and
plans to do. Joe started off the year with a tour group to the
Pasadena Rose Festival and Parade in Cal. I think this was the
first time he had ever seen this in person. After this he trained
to qualify as a Tax-Aid Counselor in the AARP Program. In
Jan. he also visited with friends in FL and took a cruise from
Tampa with ports of call in Cayman Islands, Guatelmala,
Playa del Carmen, MX. He also visited in Copan, Honduras,
and Tulum, MX. He says he met some very nice people on this
cruise. Thru Mar. he worked as a Tax-Aid volunteer for AARP.
In April Joe has plans for a one week tour of Big Bend
National Park and Carlsbad Caverns, also to attend the Smoky
Mountain Chapter meeting with tours thru the Blue Ridge
Parkway, Skyline Drive, the Biltmore Mansion in Ashville,
Jefferson's home at Monticello. Joe also plans to go to DC and
Canada before returning home. Some of these trips will be with
his new friend from Canada, Lou Schnore, whom he met on his
last cruise. In May Joe has plans for a cruise with his
Australian friend he met on another cruise. This cruise is to be
thru the Greek Isles, from Athens to Rome, with many great
ports of call. This friend's names is Shirley Long. Joe also
plans to attend his 55th HS reunion in Manhattan, KS, in Aug.
That's a great itinerary, Joe.
Joe Murray [D] called and reported that he is looking for-
Russ and Doris
McCleary [B-92].
ward to seeing everyone at the Smoky Mountain meeting. Joe
also calls to check on how Barb is doing and we thank him for
that.
Leonard Dooley [HQ]: We were all shocked to read about Len
getting injured at home. I talked to Len and this young fellow
came in and said "I'm going to kill you old man" and if Len
hadn't fought back, this probably would have happened.
Leonard is still at the rest home. This jerk of a guy hit Len
twice on the head with a hammer, and this happened before
Christmas, so you can see our buddy Len really got beat up.
We all send our best wishes to you good buddy. Len says he
has received many cards and good words.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS: Richard Hardin [A] has moved to
309 A, South Adams, Hugoton, KS 67951. Please note.
WIDOWS: I have been informed that if a widow of an active
member of our association does not contact us in some fashion
for four years, they will be dropped as associate members.
Reason for this, they say, is because we want to know they are
still interested in receiving the Hellcat News. So please drop
me a post card or letter with some news of yourself, because
actually your friends do want to hear from you.
Bud Smith [HQ-23] had a complete hip replacement the last
week of March. We send him our wishes for a speedy recovery.
Columbus Here We Come: Yes, it is time to start registering
for the national reunion. I have talked to Wayne King [HQ],
reunion chairman, and he has reserved our hospitality room.
Wayne has kept the Unit Dinner price at $20.00 including
gratuity. The choice of dinner will be either Roast Breast of
Turkey with sage stuffing and gravy, or Beef Stroganoff over
noodles. Dinner will include salad, vegetables, rolls, dessert
and drink.
So, we will accept your $20.00 per meal any time. Please
don't forget to include your choice. Any reservations without a
choice will receive the roast breast of turkey dinner. Also any
donations for the hospitality room will be accepted but are not
necessary to enjoy this room. The price that we must pay for
our hospitality room goodies is really much higher than we
would pay if we could buy our own outside. This may or may
not be possible at the last minute. We will worry about that
later.
I see our buddy, Jim Stone, is working on a 12th ADA Ger-
many Tour. I know that it will be a doozy. However, Barb and
I toured Italy, Germany, France, England, Wales, Scotland,
and Holland, on our last overseas assignment. We did not get
any Mayoral receptions, but the reason we toured as much as
SMOKY MOUNTAIN — Left to right we have Sylvester
Lumpkin [F], Sidney Brickel [F], Carold Bland [F], Bill
Hammer [B-134], Clarence Whitefield [DIV HQ], and Bill
Velasquez [152nd].
McLEAN — Jeanne Conry, Roane Figg, Sarah Figg, and
Norma Bartholomew, all D-92.
