The Community Bulletin
Saturday, February 3, 1968SCIENCE AIND INDUSTRY
In science and, to a lesser extent, in industrial
invention, Negroes have distinguished themselves. In
1770, the remarkable BENJAiIiIN BANNEI R of Maryland
made the first Arerican clock which struck off t h e
hours. HENRY T. BLAIR, also of Maryland, became the
first Negro to receive a patent when his cornharvester
was registered in 1835. NORDERT RILLIEUXIS work on
evaporation and the liquid reduction process, in the
opinion of some, has been "the greatest in thehistory
of Aml-erican chemical engineering."
The Negro has been active in the field of medical
science for a long time. As early as 1667 one LUCAS
SANTO0lE of New York was trained in medicine in Holland
and practiced under the Dutch and British. A
slave by the name of 01NEISSIMUS provided Americans -
with an effective antidote for smallpox in 1721. In
this same era, another slave, JAMiS DERHAii of Philadelphia,
became the first American Negro medicaldoctor.
By the year 1900, there were 1,734 Negroes licensed
to practice the art of healing.KNOW THE NEGRO THROUGH HIS LITErTiTUPE
"THE NEGRO" by Claude lcKay
Think ye I am not fiend and savage too?
Think ye I could not arm rx with a gun
And shoot down ten of you for every one
Of my black brothers rmrdered, burnt by you?
Be not deceived, for every deed ye do
I could r.atch--outi-tch: an I not lfricts son,
Black of that black land where black deeds are done'
But the Alrighty from the darkness drew
My soul and said: Even thou shalt be a light
Awhile to burn on the benighted earth;
Thy dusky face I sot among the white
For thee to prove thyself of highest worth;
Before the world is swallowed up in night,
To show thy little lamp; go firth, go forth!WOODSON FACULTY BREAKS
