State Fire Marshal.
.Austin, Tex., March 25.—One
of the new bills of the special
session that promises to have
easy sailing, in spite of the fact
that it creates a new State office,
is the State Fire Marshal bill,
now before the Senate and House,
with unanimous favorable re-
ports by the respective commit-
tees. The bill may be classed
among the educational. Its pur-
pose is to reduce fire losses, pri-
marily. Such laws are now in
force in 13 states.
While it is estimated that 50
per cent of the actual fire waste
in Texas is attributable to in-
cendiary orgin, the fact remains
that the State penitentiaries of
Texas hold not a prisoner con-
victed of arson in this State.
The State Fire Marshal and the
fire chiefs of every city and town
of the State are to work together
in ferreting out the causes of
fires. The Sheriff of every coun-
ty is also brought in as a co-op-
erator with the new State depart-
ment proposed.

vers other inspections are pre-
