[Special Telegram to Chicago Times.]
Oil City, Pa., April 29.
The operators and speculators in
the Pennsylvania oil regions liave
become disgusted with the prices
which crude petroleum, have been
commanding, and, iu order to bowl
up tbe figures and wake production
remunerative, have determined
upon a very decided programme.
A few days ago a special meeting
ot the Oil Producers? Association
was convened, and the demor-
alized coditiou ot the market
discussed. There seemed to be on-
ly one path to relieve the over-
stocked market, and that was to
suspend for a while, at least, the
opening of new wells. A resolution
to quit work upou new borings for
the space of ninety days was car-
lied, and lias accordingly gone into
effect. 1 his action of the associa-
tion has kicked up considerable ex
citement, but it seems to be very
generally approved by almost every-
body throughout the oil country.
By the suspension ot boring oper-
ations, about 2,000 drivers and der-
rick riggers have been thrown out
of employment; but the operators
are showing their liberality by al-
lowing these people one halt the
price of their labor while the trouble
lasts.
The petroleum market, the world
over, is terribly swamped with over
production, and it has become a
serious business with the operators
of this region that the consumption
does not keep better step with the
supply. The daily average produc-
tion for March was 24,029 barrels.
The stock on hand at fhe beginning
of the month was 2,283,032 barrels.
The stock floating at the end was
2,528,210 barrels which left an in-
crease over sales of 245,178 barrels.
In Butler County 120 ont of 130
wells now drilling have ceased oper-
ations, and the same rate will ap
ply to other localities throughout
the region. Speculators are buying
up great quantities of floating oil
and storing it, in anticipation of a
rise in prices, which will undoub
tedly be the sequel of the suspen-
sion ot drilliug. The price of crude
petroleum sank as low as $1 50 per
barrel during the last ten days,
days, which figures would not pay
for the next thirty days the price
is expected to jump lively up to $4
per barrel. Such at least is the
opinion of reliable authorities here
A Young Woman Unconscious
lor Five Days.
The New Haven Journal, of Mon-
day, records as follows the case of
young lady in that city, about nine-
teen years of age, who had been
lying in a cateleptic trance since the
uiglit of Wednesday of last week :
"She retired on that night in full
possession of health, and iu the
morning she was found, body and
limbs perfectly rigid, and lias re-
mained so ever since, last evening
nliowing no change iu her situation
Respiration and pulsation are regu-
lar and natural, but she has been
unconscious aud has taken but a
very trifling amount of nourishment.
The lady has been subject to cate-
lespy for eighteen months past, and
has, at times, without a moment's
warning, become perfectly rigid and
remaiued so for longer or shorter
intervals, sometimes for hours,
sometimes for only a few moments.
She has been seized when about
reaching her hand for any object,
and in a moment would lose all cou-
trol of her muscles. Another sin-
gular circumstance attending this
case is that about a year ago she
loss all power of speech for twenty-
four hours, but being at the time
conscious, making known her wants
by sigus. When regaining her
speech she could articulate nothing
but the German language which
she had not beeu in the habit ot
using, and which her parents were
uot aware she could speak, except
simple words. Her parents are
both cf German birth, but the
daughter has not been in the habit
ot conversing in the language, but
while in the state she spoke it with
great fluency, greatly surprising her
parents, who had never heard her
use the language to any extent. The
disease of catalepsy, or trance, it is
well known to medical men, is a
disease ot the nervous system rare-
ly met with, but not necessarily
fatal. The patient is under the
treatment of Dr. M. F. Linquist, of
this city."

MISCELLANEOUS.
[From the New Bedford Mercury.]
A good story, and all the better
iu being true, is told of one of our
citizens, who let a piece of ground
to a man on shares. Thejman would
hire the lot, but the owner, doubtful
of getting any money of the tenant,
proposed to let it upon the promise
of receiving half the products. Oc
casioually during the summer he
passed the spot, and was pleased
with the cultivation it was receiv
ing, aud with its goodly show,f>f
vegetables. Harvest time came and
passed, aud he heard nothing from
his tenant, till, in respouse to a
hint, the latter sent to him a water-
melon and three shriveled cucum-
bers. Indignant at this shabby
treatment, he called upou the man
aud asked him what he meant,
"Why, you see, 'squire,1' replied the
tenaut, "the pesky bo.vs stole all of
your half but the melon aud the
cucumbers."
Mr Murat Halstead, who accepted
an invitation some mouths ago to
deliver an adress before the Ken-
tuckey Press Association on May 20,
lias reiterated his promice, saying:
"I will be with you and speak of the
press and the people, and of the im-
portence that there may fair play be-
tween them, that the press and State
as well as the Church and State,
shall be separated.''
Georgia editors who are disposed,
in their hours of ease, to sling an
idle paragraph at the Athens Geor-
gian, should remember that Dr. Carl-
ton, the new editor, announces that
his experieuce better qualifies him
to wield the sword than the pen.
