To the Editor of the Democrat and vuroni-

Sir:—My motives lot the publication of
the iuoat unusual itatemenls which follow
are, first gratitude.for the fact that I hare
been saved iroui a most horrible death,
j and, secondly, a desire to warn all who
read this statement against some of the
most deceptive influences by which they
have ever been surrounded, it is a fact
that to-dav thousands of people are with-
in a foot of the grave and they do not
know it. To tell how 1 waso&ught away
from juot this position and to warn others
against neaiiug it, are my objects in this
communication.
On the first day for June 1181, I lav at
my residence in this city surrounded by

And Jet, if a few - 7*ar« previous any one
ha A told that i was to be brought so low,
and by so terrible a disease, I should have
scoffed at the. idea. I had always been
uncommonly strong and healthy, had
weighed over 200 pounds and harldy inew,
in my own experience, what patu or sick-
ness were. Very many people who will
read this statement realise at times that
the? are unusually tired and cannot ac-
count for it. They feel dull and indefi-
nite pains ia various parts of the body and
do not .understand it. Or they are ex-
ceedingly hmitff one day and eutiielf
without appetite the next. This was just
the way 1 Ml when fhe relentless rattlady
which ha<J fastened itself upon me first be-
gan. Still I thought it was nothing; that

tLfct thts was our last interview, but in the
course of conversation Ike mentioned a
remedy of winch 1 h*l heard much but
Had never used. Dr. Fo'ote detailed to me
the maivv remarkable cuifee which had
oome under his observation, by means of
this remedy, and urged me to try it. Aa a
practicing physician and a graduate ot the
schools, fchbri.died the prejudice both na»
tural and common with rail regular prac.-
tilioners* and derided the idea of any
j medicine outside the regular channels be-
I ing the least 'beneficial. So soiicitious,
i however, was Dr. .FfcoU, that I finally
| promued 1 would wave my prejudice and
try the remedy he so highly recommended.
1 began its use on the lH day-of June and
took it aoCordinj» to directions. At first it

days I uoticed a decided change tor the
better as also did iny wife and friends. My
hiccoughs ceased and 1 experienced leas
pain than formerly. I was so rojoiced at
this improved condition that, upon what
1 had believed but a few days before was
iny dying bed. 1 rowed, in the presence of
my lamily any trienus, should 1 recover I
would botn publicly and privately make
kuown this remedy for the good of human*
ity, whetever and whenever I had an op-
porttinitv.,1 also determined that I would
give a course of lectures iu the Corinthian
Academy of Music of thi» city, stating in
full the sympt mis aed aimost hopeless
ness of my disease and remarkable means
by which I have been, Baved. My itu-
prouemeut was constant trom that time,

from paiQ and I believe I owe my life
