GENERAL
HUGH S
JOHNSON
WUY WHIP SAW WTCRT
It Is bard for me to understand
why Mr Weir should be singled out
lor any whlpsawlng by New Deal
columnists because he accepted a
iund raising post on the national Re-
publican committee
It it Is because he has a fortune
then the Democrats had better pour
some Inkeradlcator over their own
record Johnny Raskob didnt hold
exactly that post In 1928 but he was
responsible for ihe financial end of
the party effort I dont know how
Johnnys fortune then compares
with now but it certainly wasnt
hay Among other things he had
that year was to underwrite some
of the Warm Springs obligations to
anake it easier for Mr Roosevelt to
run for governor of New York
Fat Cats Not Missing
Of course it may be said that
Johnny wasnt a New Dealer Frank
Walker took over that responsibility
when Mr Roosevelt ran In 1932 and
Frank is no potential pauper The
Democrats had their fat cats in both
1932 and 1933
The New Dealers may kick such
men around In the spotlight for the
benefit of the audience but they
dont do it in the wings Such lead
NOT EXACTLY PAUrERS
John J Raskob at ItIO raised
money for Democrats now Ernest T
JTcir utU do it for Republicans
ing lights as the ambassadors to
France England the Vatican and
lately Poland and Belgium belong
to their 60 families They may
mar them but they also marry them
The royal family Itself is conspic-
uously overlooking no opportunity
to get into the fat cat elass All of
which Is O K and above criticism
but it doesnt Justify cracks at men
of different political beliefsifor per-
forming their political offices of citi-
zens on the ground that they are far
from being on WPA relief Wealth
is as yet no crime among us and
neither Is poverty of Itself Any par-
ticular passport to preference
He Appealed and Won
Of course the attack on Mr Weir
slides oft into different ground First
that he opposed collective bargain-
ing second that William Green
once said that he offered labor noth

On Bridge Workers
Detailed to Rescue Anyone
Who Should Fall
ST LOUIS Every day for the
last six months Ben Dudley a
weather beaten 42 year old life-
guard has rowed out into the Mis-
sissippi river For eight hours each
of those days he has sat in his an-
chored boat staring up at the Eads
bridge and watching painters go
about their work like small spiders
In the web of cables beams and
braces
Dudley keeps his eye on the work-
men because he gets paid for it
If one of them should fall Dudley
is there to fish him out So far none
has fallen Three paint brushes
have been dropped the 100 odd feet
from the bridge to the river and
Dudley has retrieved each one
Once he pulled out the body of a
woman after the workmen called
hts attention to It He tied a rope
to the dress and towed the body to
shore Otherwise Dudley says it s

by General

He says of this column
As I ice the duty o a
commentator it is to
comment I am not run-
ning for any office I
am not plugging for any
party Like the veteran
umpire Bill Klem my
job is to call em as I
see em
This column wouldnt
be worth writing if it
had any duty to take a
fixed idea and whale hell
out of everybody who
disagrees and see only
as angels all who ap-
prove I am going right
on calling em as I see
em
He covers national and
world events from the
standpoint of what he sees
as American interests
You may not agree with
him but you will enjoy
his column each week
