Tallulah, La., April 23.—Judge
Lynch held court last night in
front of the jail, and the jail was
attacked and a break made inside
and the door forced open. Sam
Slaughter, Tom Claxton and Dave
Hawkins were led out and swung
up to the bannisters of the court
house until dead. Their bodies
are facing the north side of the
building. Pomp Claxton and his
four pals are still in the »wamp
north of the railroad between Mil-
liken's Bend road and the river.
The hunt is being vigorously
pressed. Dogs yesterday could
not follow the trail, owing to its
coldness. The liver and all
avenues of escape are closely
guaxlrd. Ultimate capture
is only a question of time.
The "trouble grew out of the
killing of j. B. Boyce on Satur-
day. Charles McKarland, mana-
ger of T. F. Word's plantation,
had a difficulty with Joshua Hop-
kins, a negro tenant. On Friday
a party of gentlemen, including
Boyce, started out to capture
Hopkins, but were unsuccessful.
| On the way a dog ran out of
Pomj) Claxton's house and Boyce
drew his pistol to shoot the ani-
mal, but was urged not to do so.
He refrained, but the negroes be-
ing incensed, while Boyce and his
friends were returning home,
< laxton and his pals fired on them
from ambush. Boyce was killed
and T. F. Word wounded. One
of the assassins, Harris Williams,
was captured and in trying to es-
cape was killed. Madison parish,
in w hich the tragedy occurred, is
wild with excitement.
New Orleans, April 23.—The
supreme court has decided the
matter of the State Olympic club.
The court affirmed the decision of
lower court, which was by a ma-
jority vcte of the jury decided in
favor of the club. TLe case has
been pending for months, and the
decision will permit a resumption
of glove contests in New Orleans.
Strong efforts will be made in the
coming legislature to have the
the statute under which glove con-
tests are permitted repealed, or in
such a way altered as will put a
stop to sport, but the passage of a
repeal act is very doubtful.
killed two babies.
^ Tuskcgee, Ala., April23.—Mrs.
George Sinclair's two little girls,
aged 2 and 6, were found in the
woods yesterday near their home
with their head battered in. In a
pond near by was found the body
of an insane negro, Horace John-
son, who it ia supposed had mur-
dered the children and then sui-
cided.

to strike or not?
Seattle, Wash., April 23.—The
chief iuterest here in the Great
Northern strike now centers in the
question whether the Northern
Pacific men will strike. Those
on the Pacific division of the
Northern Pacific decided not to
strike and great effoits are being
made to induce those on the other
divisions to rescind their decision
said to have been already arrived

o'clock. The more conservative

Tv.-o men sat down to a small table in
down town cluV a few eveninge since
t"r a purpose. It was to decide who pos-
sessed the greatest capacity for white
wine. Eich hod the reputation, which
ho studiously sustained, of being able to
stand more fermented juice of the grape
than the others, and their criticisms of
each other had become so unbearable
that interested persons determined by
opposing the boasters to end or mend
their talk. So a grand match was ar
fanged.
On the evening before the test a friend
of the elder contestant, who was a prac-
tical joker, approached one of the wiae
drinkers, and laying one hand confiding
ly on his shoulder spoke thus:
"Look here, old man, I speak as a
friend. You've got a reputation to ens-
tain tomorrow evening, and the other
fellow hasn't. Now, as a friend, let me
insist that you accept the bottles of wine
which I, as judge of the contest, shall
prepare. They will be filled with water.
A sad look of hopeless despair passed
over his face. To drink water, even
though he won, was inglorious; but to
drink wine and perchance lose, that waa
infinitely better. This decision resulted
in an argument that lasted half an hour,
and the wine drinker was then convinced.
On the eventful night the two men Bat
down to the table, si* bottles before
them. The younger man was quick to
the fray; the elder despaired when he
tasted the pure, unadulterated water.
But he mastered his tastes and drank
with a conquering smile.
When the sixth cork waa drawn, each
contestant stared at the other. This was
wonderfully conducive to cheerful feel
ing, and so they promptly glared at one
another. That made them rampantly
joyous. Down came one ponderous fist
on the table, and its owner, the elder
man, roared out: "Fool, how can you
win? I'm drinking water."
A wan, sweet smile passed over the
face of the younger man as he faintly
murmured, "So am I."—Philadelphia
