Awards Committee chose the Denton County African American Museum for a 2008
County Best Practice Award for Achievement in Community Improvement. This
award was presented on September 30, 2008, to Dr. Georgia Kemp Caraway, Execu-
tive Director of the Denton County Museums, and to County Judge Mary Horn by
2 Betsy Price, Tarrant County Tax Assessor/Collector and Vice Chair of the Texas Asso-
ciation of Counties Leadership Foundation, along with Roy Orr, a Leadership Founda-
2 tion Board Member, who was previously a Dallas County Commissioner and a presi-
dent of NACo (National Association of Counties).

The Denton County African American Museum was one of 24 county programs around
3 the state honored by the TAC Leadership Foundation. The programs were selected to
receive honors for innovation, achievement, and delivery of service in the 2008 County
3 Best Practice Awards, which recognize county initiatives that serve as a model to oth-
ers and save taxpayer monies.

Serving as a bridge between communities in the county and city, the Denton County
4 African American Museum is only one of ten such museums in Texas. The museum
opened in February 2008 and became an immediate success story with more than 500
visitors in just two months. Extraordinary media attention helped generate close to
8,500 hits on the Denton County Museum Web site. Other cities across Texas are us-
ing the museum as a model for developing their own African American heritage muse-
TAC's County Best Practice Awards Program promotes efficiency in local govern-
ment by focusing attention on accomplishments and best practices in county govern-
ment. The awards program:
" Highlights innovation and distributes vital information on what's working in
county government
" Encourages recognition and inspiration for all county leaders; and
" Improves the general public's perception of their county government and the
value of their county's programs
