Three outstanding indi-
viduals and one outstand-
ing business were all hon-
ored at the 45th Annual
Sweetwater Chamber of
Commerce Instillation
Banquet
The Outstanding Young
Citizen award was given to
Martin Baker. The award
was presented by Aubrey
Turnbow, last year's recip-
ient of the award.
In her speech, Turnbow
described Baker as "a per-
son that has contributed to
the welfare and advance-
ment of Sweetwater
through community activ-
ities, church involvement
and in his occupation.
Baker was not born
nor was he raised here in
Sweetwater, but was born
in New York and raised
in Kerville. His family
thought that it was very
important for their child
to be involved in activities
that promoted teamwork,
good character, leadership
and community service.
In the second grade,
Baker became a Cub
Scout. He attended Tivy
High School and played
soccer, was in the march-
ing band and played the
french horn. Growing up
he was active and assisted
his father with search and
rescue with the Civil Air
Patrol.
His junior year of high
school, Baker was a for-
eign exchange student in
Germany, where he played
soccer and traveled. With
lots of time, training and
community projects, he
eventually earned his
Eagle Scout award at the
age of 18 and graduated
from Tiw High School in
tqqo.
"One of his fathers and
mother’s proudest memo-
ry of their son was when
he was 19 years old, said
Turnbow," He had come
home from Texas Tech
University, and his frater-
nity was working a canned
food collection for the
needy, when a woman had
a heart attack. He yelled
for someone to call 911,
and he began giving her
CPR until EMS arrived
and took over.
At a young age it was
never about the glory',
but about helping those
in need. Because of quick
thinking and the train-
ing he received in the
Scouts, the Civil Air Patrol
awarded him with Bravery
Stars for his Acts of Good
Service."
Baker then went on to
earn his Bachelor’s degree
in mechanical engineering
fromTexasTech University
in 1994, and went to
work for Georgia Pacific
in Sweetwater. Currently
he is now employed by
Ludlum Measurements
where he has been for the
past eight years.
For 10 years, Baker has
been the Assistant Scout
Master of Troop 140 and
Den Leader of pack 146
for two years. He plans
and attends weekly meet-
ings, monthly camp outs
and chaperones out of
town summer camps. A
friend said, “He takes the
responsibility of helping
to raise boys to men very
seriously, yet all the while
seasons it with fun.”
Baker is the president
of the United Way board
and an active member
and deacon at the Fourth
and Elm Church of Christ,
where he has spent many
hours transforming and
maintaining Cornerstone
Christian Preschool. He
is also a member of the
Sweetwater Youth Soccer
Association where he helps
refereeing soccer games
and coaches.
Turnbow continued, "1
have had the pleasure of
working along side this
man, and I hold him in
the highest regards. With
all of the things this man is
involved in, he manages to
do things in our commu-
nity not wanting anyone to
know who has done them,
and wanting no credit for
his time spent. He mows
neighbor’s yards, is always
checking on and serving as
a handy man for widows
that live nearby, and freely
gives of his time and tal-
ents whenever he can."
His wife said, “What
makes him special is that
he is always willing to help
anyone in need. He has an
uncanny knack for fixing
things and he helps with
a willing spirit and a little
grin.”
Baker has three chil-
dren that he cherishes,
Tristan, 8; Hayden, 5; and
Kennedy, 1. He and his
wife Stephanie have been
married for 11 years.
The Outstanding Female
Citizen award for 2009 was
given to Karan Bergstrom.
Maijorie Wilks, last year's
winner, presented her with
the award.
Bergstrom isa memberof
the First United Methodist
Church where she serves
on innumerable commit-
tees and takes several vol-
unteer opportunities. She
has been president of the
United Methodist Women
for several years where
she has planned and led
meetings to further grow
the spiritual lives of the
congregation. She serves
on the fellowship commit-
tee, planning fellowship
events and opportunities.
Bergstrom helps serve
the bereavement commit-
tee by assisting in cook-
ing, cleaning and setting
up the kitchen and fel-
lowship hall for funerals.
She is also responsible for

teers and scheduling these
individuals for adequate
coverage at both the early
and late Sunday services.
She is currently a direc-
tor for the Children's Day
Out program, where she
can be found setting up
for banquets, assisting
at Easter Egg hunts and
splash day events or sub-
