Continued from panel
stituting for an ill teach-
er. She was chairperson
for the mother/daughter
Valentine's Day banquet
in which she set up the
event, arranged for enter-
tainment, planned the
menu and made table
favors. She is the chair-
person for the graduating
senior luncheon held every
year. Bergstrom makes
invitations, sets up for the
event, plans and prepares
all food and plans for the
entertainment. She also
serves as the only assistant
on the Seniors in Touch
prayer partner banquet.
She gathered decorations,
prepared the food, set up
the room and assisted on
favors. Bergstrom is also
an active member of the
Sister Act Sunday school
group. These ladies sup-
port the community
by donating time and
money to different causes
throughout the year.
Bergstrom is also active-
ly involved with Xi Alpha
Alpha Kappa chapter of
Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
She has been a member
for over 30 years, the
sorority helps the Jaycees
with their Thanksgiving
Day Feed. She has held all
offices in the sorority and
has been named Girl of
the Year numerous times.
She has also been Queen
numerous times.
Bergstrom has been
a member of the Lions'
Club for numerous years.
Although technically a
current inactive member,
Bergstrom still assists
annually with club fund-
raisers as well as the
Rattlesnake Round-Up
flea market responsibili-
ties.
In addition to for-
mal church activities,
Bergstrom is very involved
with community spiritual
growth activities. Since
attending the Walk to
Emmaus several years
ago, she stays busy by
hosting weekly Emmaus
Reunion group meetings
at her home. This group
gives back to the Emmaus
community with their ser-
vice, prayers and time.
Prior to retiring a few
years back to be a full-time
grandmother, Bergstrom
worked over 20 years at
Edward Jones. She and her
husband, Jon Bergstrom,
started the office in
Sweetwater in 19B3. They
worked as a team to help
the people of Sweetwater
to invest in sound invest-
ment opportunities.
Bergstrom was also
involved with the Nolan
County Relay for Life. This
past year, she assisted
with Luminaries. These
are placed around the
track in honor of a loved
one who may have passed
away after battling cancer.
She helped to sell these
and raise money for the
American Cancer Society.
Bergstrom's daughter,
Denise Blake, nominated
her and said, "She is a
God-given gift to me. She
is the best mother that
God could have ever given
me. She has always served
as a role model and care-
giver to me and my fam-
ily. She is someone who I
only wish 1 could be more
like. She unselfishly gives
of her time and her talents
to her family, the church
and her community. She
always has a smile on her
face and will never let an
unkind word or person
bring down her spirit."
Blake says that when she
had her first child in 2000,
Bergstrom quit her job to
keep her grandson, Jaden
as she went back to work.
"Although I no longer
work outside of the home,
she still insists on keeping
her grandkids whenever
she possibly can."
Bergstrom can also be
found assisting at .Jaden',s
East Ridge Elementary fall
festival events, silent auc-
tions, open houses, baking
cookies for parties, etc. She
even helped her daugh-
ter organize a garage sale
for another grandson's
school (Ryan) Sweetwater
Christian School this year.
Bergstrom has lived
in the community for 25
years. In that time, she has
served on the Chamber
of Commerce Board of
Directors as well as being
Ambassador. She also
helps with the Sweetwater
Goodfellows. "She has
never asked for or would
even want recognition for
all that she does," said her
daughter.
Bergstrom was born July
19, 1947, in Gilmer, Texas.
She and her husband Jon
have two children, Derrick
and wife Carrie of Austin
and Denise Blake and hus-
band Jason of Sweetwater.
They have four grandchil-
dren, Evan Bergstrom,
6; Emme Bergstrom, 4;
Jaden Blake, 9; and Ryan
Blake, 4.

Citizen award was given
to Sweetwater Mayor Greg
Wortham. The award was
presented to him by last
year's recipient, Homer
Taylor.
"Regarding the assign-
ment on hand of naming
the newest outstanding

long ago to have a check
list to keep me on task,"
said Taylor. Ilis list fol-
lowed.
• The new outstanding
male is over 40 years old.
• This person resides
in Nolan County and
Sweetwater.
• One of the principal
guidelines is that the per-

standing career accom-
plishments list, which this
person does.
• The outstanding male
citizen should also have
a long list of accomplish-
ments outside of his
career, which this person
does.
"Even with a long list
of qualified nominees, the
selection committee soon
came to the same conclu-
sion that this nominee
should be recognized for
2009," added Taylor.
"This man was born in
1961. He graduated from
Sweetwater High School in
1979. He started college at
Tulane, then transferred to
Rice. I Ie worked for both
the Houston Oilers and
The New Orleans Saints
in public relations. After
graduating from Rice, he
worked in Main Street
projects for four years,"

the University of Texas in
Austin, where he achieved
his degree in law. He pro-
ceeded to work in various
offices as legal aid to House
of Representatives and
Senate members, includ-
ing then U.S. Congressman
Charles Stenholm.
"From the legislative
assignments, our citizen of
the year went to New York
City where he worked for
the Rural Electrification
Administration. This per-
son also worked part-time
for TSTC and assisted the
President with an Israeli
project," added Taylor.
From these assign-
ments, Wortham returned
to Sweetwater to pursue
interests in the newly
expanding wind energy
sectors. He is the founder
of the West Texas Wind
Energy Consortium
and the Wind Energy
Clearinghouse.
In his new work, he
has traveled and spoken
at many national and
international wind ener-
gy conferences, having

Dakota where he filled in
for the current US Energy
