Local dog trainer has list of titles
BY AMANDA MORENO
Staff Writer
As long as she can remember, Brenda
Stevens, a Sweetwater resident, has had a
love for dogs. She received her first dog, a
border collie, at the age of 12.
She has been training since the mid-
90s. She has competed with numerous
dogs in confirmation competition and
agility trials. She has trained and titled six
dogs. Her first agility title on a whippet
was in October of 2000.
"When 1 started, 1 was looking for a
border collie to compete with, but I love
competing with my whippets," Brenda
Stevens said. "The whippets are harder to
train, but if you can train a good one then
you can be at the top of the breed."
Stevens said that she is currently com-
peting in agility trials with her whip-
pet, Ember, and has a border collie that
injured its back.
"I'm trying to train her and get her
back, but I’m not sure if I will be able to
compete with her again in the agility tri-
als," Stevens said.
According to Stevens, border collies are
easier to train, but the whippets provide
a challenge and tend to take longer to
train.
She said that she trained about two or
three months with her border collie, but
she is continuously training with Ember.
"It’s more of a challenge with whippets
because you have to keep them inter-
ested. They don't do it because you tell
them to, they have to do it because they
are interested in it," Stevens said.
"Every day is training with Ember."
When she was in college, Stevens
showed shelties, and she has trained a
German shepherd in obedience.
"The more time goes by the more I
love them and the more I love to train,"
Stevens said.
Stevens said I hat she trains with a group
in Abilene, at A-Plus Canine College,
and at home. She said that she knows
and trains with people from Lubbock,
Amarillo, and even a tew from here.
"I receive tips from different people.
They are glad to help each other out.
It's not such a cut-throat competition,"
Stevens said.
She said that she continues to be
competing for at least another 20 or 30
years.
"Trying to make dogs enjoy it, mak-
ing little improvements every time, that's
what keeps me doing this," Stevens said.
"To know that I've improved something
every time I go. If it was all about winning
every time, I wouldn't be doing this still."
Stevens and Ember are on the go nearly
every weekend, February through May
and again from October through the mid-
dle of December. She also competes in
San Antonio, in June.
"San Antonio is my favorite one, just
because my sister, who also shows, goes
with me and we turn it into a mini-vaca-
tion," Stevens said.
She is only able to attend the two-day
competition, on Sundays, but she is hop-
ing that she might be able to change that.
'This is a fun sport. It can be as com-
petitive as you want it to be. You can do
well and still not go to the international
shows," Stevens said. "The more fun you
have with it, the better your dogs will do,
at least that's what I have found to be
true."
Stevens knows that all of this wouldn't
be as possible, or as much fun without
the help and support from her boss-
es, her friends and her family. Stevens
is employed by Sweetwater Veterinary
Hospital.
"My sister has made these competitions
a lot more fun these past couple of years,"
Stevens said.
Sweetwater resident Brenda Stevens is shown with her
whippet Ember. Stevens has been training dogs for
many years now and plans to continue for the next 2(1
to 30 years.

Texas venture capital firm launches fund to
invest in Texas-based technology companies
Pillar Capital
Management, LLC (PCM),
a team of 10 success-
ful technology entrepre-
neurs and financiers,
has launched the Pillar
Technology Ventures, LP
fund to invest in Texas-
based, early-stage tech-
nology companies. The
Fund will focus primar-
ily on companies previ-
ously funded by the state-
managed Texas Emerging
Technology Fund.
“1 am pleased that
the Texas Emerging
Technology Fund’s efforts
to invest in early stage
companies and bring inno-
vative technologies to the
marketplace has sparked
private sector investment
activity like that of Pillar
Capital Management,”
said Governor Rick
Perry. “Ongoing invest-
ment in Texas businesses
that are pioneering next-
generation technological
advancements is vital to
helping these early stage
ventures succeed.”
Governor Rick Perry and
the Texas Legislature bold-
ly stepped forward in 2005
to significantly enhance
the state’s infrastructure
to support emerging tech-
nology companies by cre-
ating the Texas Emerging
Technology Fund (TETF).
The TETF aims to
strengthen Texas’ capabil-
ity to innovate, commer-
cialize and capitalize on
breakthrough technolo-
gies. The TETF provides
critical funding for all
three areas.
The TETF has bolstered
innovation through 15
awards to date totaling
$62 million to 11 pub-
lic universities to recruit
world-class researchers
with significant commer-
cialization experience. The
TETF has made 13 awards
totaling $84.7 million to
Texas universities and
university-related consor-
tiums in order to expedite
commercialization in fields
as diverse as nanotechnol-
ogy, pharmaceuticals and
energy.
The most innovative part
of the TETF’s mandate is
providing seed capital to
technology companies that
are working with a Texas
private or public univer-
sity to commercialize truly
breakthrough technology.
Companies undergo a
minimum 6-month due
diligence process that
involves hundreds of
experts who volunteer
their time and expertise to
evaluate and vet prospec-
tive companies. To date
over 1,000 companies have
submitted applications
and only 75 companies
in 17 technology-related
industries have received
investments totaling $94.8
million.
“Currently, Texas pres-
ents a unique opportunity
for venture capital inves-
tors because of three main
factors,” said Robert
Rough, Managing Director,
