AUSTIN — Texas leads the
nation in global warming
emissions. It may not be a
shocking to learn this, as Texas
is also among the most heavily
industrialized states in the
union. Senator Rodney Ellis
and Representative Allen
Vaught have taken a proactive
approach to the growing prob-
lem. The two Congressmen
submitted a bill Tuesday
morning at the state capitol
building in Austin. The propo-
sition would place a temporary
moratorium on the construc-
tion of at least 12 coal-fueled
power and pet-coke plants
slated to be built in Texas.
Along with the Congressmen,
leaders of environmental groups
such as Public Citizen, and the
Sustainable Energy and Economic
Development (SEED) Coalition,
;uid members of various commu-
nities that are fating the arrival of
coal-fueled plants, spoke in favor
of the bill.
Representing Sweetwater,
Nolan County and the Multi-
County Coalition, was Patricia
Broadwell, a Roscoe resident
who owns a farm just 182 feet
from Tenaska's property line.
Her brother Richard

The Tenaska project, the

being touted as the world's
first "clean" coal plant.
According to Dr. Greg Kunkel,
vice-president of environmen-

first of it's kind, but the carbon

Where does the time go? It seems
like only yesterday that Christmas
decorations were tucked away. Now
it is time to get involved with the
Chamber of Commerce in planning
the next Christmas celebration for
Sweetwater. The Chamber asks resi-
dents of the community for their
help.
Tne Sweetwater Chamber of
Commerce special projects and
events committee recently met to
begin planning for a proposed
Christmas lighting for downtown
Sweetwater. Luckily, the committee
is not just starting from scratch.
There are some lighted Christmas
displays, which in past years were
displayed at Newman Park, that are
in good condition and just need a bit
of work along with the Christmas
tree that was displayed at the Nolan
County Court House last year. The
tree is also in need of repair or
replacement and new lights.
Volunteers and businesses are being
sought to house the light displays
along downtown Sweetwater. Lights
are also needed for the downtown
area and for the trees displayed every
holiday season at Rolling Plains
Memorial Hospital.
All of these repairs and needs take
money, so the Chamber of Commerce
has planned a sale to benefit the
needs to make downtown
Sweetwater a bright and magical
sight for residents and guests. The
sale will take place the beginning of
May, at the chamber of Commerce,
located at 810 E. Broadway. A date
will be set at a later time. The com-
mittee is currently seeking donations
of good, clean, sellable items, exclud-
ing clothing. Merchants are also
encouraged to donate items to the
cause — new or used. Items can be
dropped off at the Chamber office the
w’eek of April 27-30. All proceeds will
go towards purchasing the items
needed to make the downtown
Sweetwater lights a success.
The Christmas committee is also
announcing a contest to rename the
Christmas celebration event. In past
years, the event was called the "Trail
of Lights," and a cash prize of $50
will be awarded to the winner of the
contest. Those with ideas may sub-
mit their new name for the event to
the Sweetwater Chamber of
Commerce, P.O. Box 1148.
Sweetwater, TX 79556.
The Chamber of Commerce appre-
ciates the past commitment of volun-
teers to Sweetwater special events.
The next meeting of the special
events committee will be at 5 p.m.
Wednesday, April 15, at the Chamber
office. Anyone interested in working
on the committee is encouraged to
attend.
