PREFACE
In rest, Texas,.-where two Czech newnpers are printed,
where Czech is taught in the high school, rhere three churches
conduct services in Czech, where over one half of the citizens
are of Czech descent--it is only natural that one should feel
another civilization Aingling "ith the Aerioan and be sensi-
tive to the presence of Czechoslovakian lore in almost every
rhase of. life.
During the study of Southwestern literature in my English
clan s in 'est :1igh ehool I made an atte pt to nrna;en the
ounils to the literature and the folklore that surround'r them,
including the folklore that has been transplanted to the South-
wcst and has become so well acclimated that it has become a
cart of everyday life for these Czech-American Texans. They
brought in an abundance of rnaterinrl: little rhymes remembered
from childhood, games they had lately played, sonic they still
sang, beliefs their forefathers had sown, customer they yet ob-
served, tales their grandnarents had told them--Czech foThlore
in Texas! The term themes of two classes, one in 1939 and
another in 1941, yielded a rich lode of material. Interviews,
meanwhile, with -upils rnd -ith friends outside of school fur-
nished both informs tion and enthu 'iasm.
