Miller named to coordinating board

Martha A. Miller, retired
dean of Panola College, was
appointed to the Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board
by Governor Ann Richards.
Miller is the only person
from Northeast Texas serving
on the board, the highest state
authority on matters concerning
public higher education.
According to Director of
Relations/Services Twink Ross,
Miller is the first committee
member from a community col-
lege to be appointed to the
Coordinating Board.
"She (Miller) will be a
strong voice for Panola and
other Texas community colleges
as well," said Ross.
The Coordinating Board is
comprised of 18 members who

Graduation sign-up ends soon
Students who haven't signed up for graduation need to do so
between January 27 and January 31. For more information
contact the Admissions Office.
College store enforces new rule
Students who enter the Panola College Store need to remember
to place their books on the front table. Failure to do so will
result in that person paying for the books that he or she brings
into the store before being allowed to leave.

Financial aid disbursements will be available on or about
February 17. For more information contact Wanda Gaines.
Senate to host dance
Panola College Student Senate will be hosting the 1992
Homecoming dance from 8 p.m. until midnight on January 28.
The Homecoming Court will be announced during the dance.
Guys should wear ties and sport coats and girls should dress in
prom-type dresses.
Black History Month set
February is Black History Month, and Panola College will
be offering several opportunities to get in on the celebration.
This year speakers, contests, and performances are planned to
celebrate the accomplishments of the past, and determine the
goals for the future. A schedule of events will be posted at sev-
eral locations around campus.
To "kick off the month's festivities, interested students are
asked to participate in an essay contest. The winner will re-
ceive a fabulous prize. Any student may enter the contest.
Registration forms will be available in various offices on cam-
pus.

professional career in higher
education, worked closely with
the Coordinating Board in the
past in her capacity as dean of
admissions and records at
Panola.
"This is a prestigious award
for Miller and we are proud to
have her supporting Panola
and other community colleges
on the Coordinating Board,"
said Ross.
Miller achieved numerous
awards and honors during her
tenure at Panola.
Upon her retirement in 1988,
the Panola College Board of
Trustees voted unanimously to
name the administration build-
ing the Martha A. Miller
Administration Building.

A full, fun-filled week of
various activities is planned
this year for the Panola
College Homecoming '92.
Homecoming will take place
this week.
This year, the homecoming
theme is "Remember When."
Although all Panola exes are
invited to return to Panola
College for Homecoming, this
year's celebration honors
Panola College students and
faculty from the 1960's.
The- celebration starts on
Tuesday night with a formal
dance for the students. The
dance, sponsored by the Student
Senate, will be held from 8p.m.
to midnight in the Student
Center Ballroom.
Members of the Homecoming
Court will be announced that
evening.
An election for the
Homecoming court, king and
queen was held last week by
the Student Senate.
Announcement of the king
and queen will be made at cere-
monies between the Fillies and
Ponies game Saturday.
Wednesday will feature the
first of the Cecil Vernon
Robertson Lecture series.
Named after a retired Panola
College chemistry instructor,
the series promises to be an an-
nual event.
The lecture series is spon-
sored by the Panola College
Library Center and will feature
columnist Bill Murchison from
the Dallas Morning News.
The lecture is scheduled for
lp.m. in the Q.M. Martin
Auditorium.
More activities are sched-
uled on Thursday and Friday,
starting with the play called
From Hardscrabble. The Drama
Department performances are
scheduled for 7p.m. each
evening.
The play was written by Ben
Z. Grant, a former Panola stu-
dent, now serving as the 6th
District circuit judge of Texas in
Texarkana.
Prior to the play on Friday,
a salad supper will be held for
scholarship donors and
honorees.
Following the Friday perfor-
mance, play- goers can "Meet
the Playwright" at a reception
given in his honor.
A poster contest is also
planned. All posters turned in
to decorate the gym by various
student clubs and organizations
will be judged by the Panola
Faculty Association on Friday.
Prizes will be given for first,
second and third places.
Most of the festivities are
planned for Saturday, the final
day.
Starting off will be a pep
rally on the Carthage square at
10a.m. The Panola cheerlead-
ers, band, twirlers, teams and
special guests are expected at
the event.
Later that day, there will be
several receptions held for such
organizations as the Pipers,
choir, Drama Department,
Green Jackets, athletics, band,
cheerleaders, and the drill
team.
A reception for all returning
faculty will also be held and
afterwards, another reception
honoring the students and fac-
ulty of the 1960's.
Other receptions scheduled
for the day involve all stu-
dents, past and present, and
also one to honor all scholar-
ship donors and honorees.
A presentation of the
Homecoming court will follow,
along with an Alumni
Association Meeting. A buffet
dinner will be held in the
Student Center at 4:30 to 6p.m.
Tours of the campus will be
available Saturday on the half
hour from 1 to 3p.m. and from
4:30 to 5:30p.m.
Topping the week off will be
the Fillie and the Pony games
Saturday night. The Fillies
will play the Paris Junior
College Lady Dragons at 6p.m.
The Ponies will tip off again
against the Paris Dragons at
8p.m.
"Everyone is invited to at-
tend and encouraged to take
part in all the many exciting
festivities," said Twink Ross.

Miller served two terms on
the state placement committee
of the Texas Academic Skills
Council from 1986 to 1988.
She served from 1984 to 1986
on the state Core Curriculum for
Texas colleges and universities.
Also, from 1970 to 1987
Miller served as an annual del-
egate to the Southern
Association of Colleges and
Schools.
In 1960, 1970 and 1980 she
served as chairman of the
Panola College self-study
steering committee of the
Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools.

Cecil V. Robertson Lecture
Series during Homecoming
Week.
The series is dedicated to
Cecil Robertson, a former
chemistry and physics instruc-
tor at Panola.
The. lecture will be held in
the Q.M. Martin auditorium on
Wednesday January 29, at 1
p.m.
Academic Dean Charles
Hughes said the series was the
creation of the Library
Committee.

editorial columnist for the
Dallas Morning News.
Murchison is no stranger to
East Texas. He was born in
Corsicana where he eventually
worked for the newspaper.
Murchison also received the
key to that city along with
Panola history instructor Bill
O'Neal. Murchison received
the key for literary achieve-
ment.
After graduating from the
University of Texas, he began
working for the Dallas Times
Herald. He now works for the
