Congregational vote scheduled after Rev. Michael Piazza surrenders
credentials to Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches
By David Webb
Staff Reporter =.
An upcoming vote by the Cathedral of
Hope's congregation — abruptly scheduled as
the church's highest-ranking official surren-
dered his credentials to the Universal
Fellowship of Metropolitan Community
Churches — will determine not only the affili-
ation and direction of the world's largest gay
and lesbian church, but possibly the fate of its
leaders, according to a church spokesman.
Cathedral executive director Ken Upton
said that a vote by the congregants to remain
affiliated with the Universal Fellowship of
Metropolitan Community Churches would
send a strong message to the church's current
leadership.
"What we are growing to be is different
from what Metropolitan Community
Churches is growing to be," Upton said. "If the
congregation tells us in a vote that they don't
like the direction we are taking them, and they
want to [remain with the denomination], then
I think the leadership has to consider whether
it is time for a change of leadership.
"We certainly respect the fact that the con-
gregation controls its destiny, but we believe
that we are called to be the progressive inclu-
sive church that we're trying to become, and

Gay and lesbian supporters packed the
crowd and the stage at Democratic presiden-
tial candidate Howard Dean's rally in front of
Dallas City Hall Sunday night.
When Dean ascended the stage about an
hour after the crowd of about 1,000 gathered
he launched into a spiel that covered the spec-
trum from social liberal to fiscal conservative.
All Americans should enjoy financial security,
benefits, fairness and freedom, he said.
"I'm bred of being divided by race in this
country," said Dean, who attended a fundrais-
er given for him by gay and lesbian supporters
during his Dallas stay. "I'm bred of being
divided by gender in the country. I'm bred of
being divided by sexual orientation.
"I'm not in favor of gay rights. I'm in favor
of equal rights for ever}' single American."
The crowd erupted in applause and cheers
as Dean spoke of his vision for a united
America and his pride in signing Vermont's
controversial civil union law when he was
governor.
Dean said he wanted to offer people the
choice between tax cuts and jobs, education
and health care.
"Most people are going to pick jobs, educa-
tion and health care ..." Dean said.
Dean said that while he was governor of
Vermont that the state reduced child abuse by
43 percent and child sexual abuse by 70 per-
cent through innovative social programs.
~ Of his stance against the Iraq war, Dean
said, "I want to live in a country where we are
