REFUGIO, REFUGIO COUNTY, TEXAS, THURSDAY, JULY 20, 1961 Jl3 - 0 JZJ EIGHT PAGES—TEN CENTS
VOLUME XXXIII—NO. 42
The News from Every Section of Refugio County
With the close of the Softball
Association League play Tuesday
night the lights will not go off at
the local softball diamond.
The tournament will furnish ac-
tion and activity for the next
week.
Then the girls teams <— organ-
ized into a league — will be busy
for several weeks.
Thursday (TONIGHT) our loyal-
ty is to the Little League All-
Stars, then Friday night to the
Pony League All-Stars. Of course,
for those who like to travel the
Pony Leaguers will be at Odem
for their first game, and Refugio
County will be represented at
Ingleside on Friday night.
. . . And here’s hoping there
will be more games as our All-
Stars advance.

Summing up ... it has been a
good year. There has been sever-
al shows of temper and a couple
of unpleasant things. But, do any
of us have a child who has been
perfect day after day and week
after week And, aren’t these men
nothing more than grown up
boys ?
Indeed, we do not approve or
endorse these shows of unsports-
manship conduct. In fact, we
would have been even more severe
in the meteing out of punishment
and censure.
Yet, it would certainly be un-
fair to the vast majority of play-
ers and fans to stop all play just
because of the misbehavior of just
a few.
You and I owe a great big vote
of thanks to a number of people.
This season has witnessed the im-
proving of the Little League park,
the vastly improving of the Pony
League diamond after being mov-
ed to a location near the Little
League diamond, the building of
a fine softball diamond with ex-
sSellent facilities including good
bleachers.
Yes, someone had done a lot of
work so many of us can have
fine entertainment either as a
participant or as a spectator.

Water District Authorizes
2 Water Studies in County
Refugio. — Two water projects
have been authorized for Refugio
County by the Refugio County Wa-
ter Control and Improvement Dis-
trict No. 2.
The first project is a water sur-
vey and the other is further sur-
vey of dam sites within the county
with emphasis on the Blanco River
and Woodsboro (Aransas River)
sites.
The local district will enter into
control with the Texas Board of
Water Engineers and the Geologi-
cal Survey, United Stales Depart-
ment of Interior for the ground
water survey.
This project, at an estimated
cost of better than $20,000, is slat-
ed to start in September of this
year. It will seek, as objectives,
to obtain:
1. Description of the subsurface
geology of the area to show loca-
tion, thickness and extent of water-
bearing sands;
lems as they relate to development
of additional ground - water sup-
plies.
The financing of this project will
be assumed on a basis of the local
water district paying approximate-
ly one fourth of the cost, the State
Water Board one-fourth and the
Department of Interior one-half.
M. Klug and Les McMiilian of
the Ground Water Division of the
Texas Board of Water Engineers
met with the directors of the lo-
cal water district, representatives
of the engineers firm of Lookwood,
Andrews & Newman, Inc. and lo-
cal citiens on Thursday, July 20,
in the directors’ room of the First
National Bank of Refugio for the
purpose of discussing the survey,

Refugio. — Assistant Chief En-
gineer of the Texas State High-
way Department has received pe-
titions, bearing over 1200 signa-
tures, requesting a correction in
hazardous conditions on Highway
77 north of Refugio.
He informed H. F. Adrian, who
presented the petitions in behalf
of the signers — ;nxostly Refugio
County residents, that the High-
way Department was alert to the
present condition, was making an
investigation for possible im-
provements, and that action would
be forthcoming.
The letter, which accompanied
the petitions, reads:
Mr. D. C. Greer, Chief Engineer
Texas Highway Department
Austin, Texas
The Citizens of Refugio County
viewed another double death, first have to travel Highway 77 between
hand, on its highways when on
June 17, 1961 one of our leading
citizens and his daughter were
trapped on a narrow bridge, just
north of the Refugio city limits.
This tragedy is just one of a series
of deaths caused by hazardous
highway conditions on this north-
ern approach to Refugio. Records
reflect that in excess of fifteen
deaths have occurred at the nar-
row underpass or on this narrow
bridge on Highway 77, all within
a few hundred yards of each oth-
er.
This condition can be and should
be corrected. The attached peti-
tion is presented to you at this
time as a sincere expression of
the concern we have for our safe-
ty and the safety of all those who
Possible Local PoKo Case
Awaits Medical Reports
Refugio. — County Health Offi-
cer T. C. Meitzen stated that final
reports had not been received on
a possible Refugio polio, case as of
noon Wednesday.
A teenage Refugio High School
lad is in the Refugio County Hos-
pital with polio symptoms. He has
received polio shots in the past,
and therefore if his case is polio
he is expected to suffer little if
any ill effects.
Earlier this year there had been
a polio case from the Tivoli area.
A four-year-old child, who had not
received polio shots, was stricken.
Attention is invited to other
items in this newspaper in regard
to polio shots: a news item on
page one; an editorial on page
six: and a public service an-
nouncement on page four.
Refugio and points north. The sign-
ers of the petition represent no
formal organization or pressure
group. They feel, as I do, that
the gravity and magnitude of the
problem justifies a complete and
comprehensive study of ways and
means to remove the hazards de-
scribed in the attached petition.
We have no pre-set ideas or
plans on how this change can best
be accomplished. We know that
you, with your competent stall,
can best design the necessary
changes. We do earnestly request
that such a study be initiated as
soon as practicable.

lopment of ground-water supplies
of the chemical quality a n d in

to make their study on the basis
of what is most practical for Re-
fugio County rather than on any
one geographical location.
In preliminary study and report
of Water Development for the Wa-
tersheds In and Bordering Refugio
County, this firm has listed five
possible sites for the storage of
water.
It is a follow-up of this prelim-
liminary report that brings about
these two new studies as current
developments trend to show an ev-
er-increasing possibility of the
advantages of water storage in
Refugio County.

Firemen Answer
2 Calls to Trucks
Refugio. — Two calls this week
— one Monday morning and the
other Wednesday about 1 p.m.—
summoned Refugio firemen to the
sites of truck mishaps.
Monday the firemen traveled
about 10 miles west on Highway
202 to a truck on which a set of
rear tires had ignited following one
of the tires going flat. The truck
was loaded with diesel fuel. Dam-
age was restricted to the tires on
the dual wheels where the flat
had occurred.
Early report on the Wednesday
call, from 10 miles north of Re-
fugio on Highway 77, was that a
gasoline truck had overturned.
The firemen and equipment were
wanted to stand-by as a precau-
tionary measure.
WHY NOT BUILD? Since Dad’s firm is advertising in the Refugio Timely Re-
marks how new construction and remodeling can be so easily financed Richard
and Robert Shaw are in the midst of improving their tree house. Robert, with
hammer, believes he could use a little less supervision from Richard but all in all
the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Strauch C. Shaw report good progress.
