THIS, THAT, AND THE OTHER
Failure. Failing at something en-
larges the spirit of a person with strong
eharacter, while it damages the spirit
of a weak eharacter. On the other
hand, suecess makes a strong charac-
ter more gentle and responsive to the
needs and cares of those around him.
A weak eharacter, however, becomes
more aggressive, belligerent, and tyran-
nical in behavior.

135 Million Insured American.s About
135 million Americans now háve life in-
surance protection, the Institute of
Life Insurance reports.
With the nation’s total population
just past the 200 million mark, this
means the lives of two out of every
three men, women and children in the
United States are insured..
The 135 million include all persons
eovered by individual and group plans
with private insurance organizations as
well as those under government life in-
surance programs.
The Institute reports that legal re-
servo life insurance companies now in-
sure about 130 million Americans.
Most families háve at least some life
insurance protection. Coverage is al-
most universa! among families with
young children.
While life insurance is widely thought
of as an absolute neeessity, sfcatistics
THOUGHTS. . .
“Rejoiee, O young man in your youth—
And let your heart eheer you in the
days of youth;
Walk in the ways of your heart and
the sight of your eyes. — Solomon

of suspicions than of certainties, and
thus refuses to exchange the one for
the other.

indicate that many families need more
protection than they now háve. The
average amount in force would cover
about two years of disposable income
per family. At the beginning of this
year, the average life insurance pro-
tection per family was $15,900.
The need for life insurance can vary
considerably even among families with
similar incomes. But, as a rule of
thumb, many experts in financial plan-
ning advise that families generally
need at least enough to cover four to
five years of family income.
Although the nation’s protection
level can still be considered low in re-
lation to needs, life insurance coverage
is inereasing faster than family in-
come.
For example, the average amount of
life insurance per family has more
than doubled during the past decade.
During the same period, disposable in-
come per family climbed only 50 per
cent.
By far the largest share of family
life insurance protection is logically
on the husband. Many families also
carry at least some insurance on the
wife, who makes an important econo-
mic contribution even when she does
not earn income. Particularly with
wider use of family pian policies, cov-
erage also often includes at least mo-
dest amounts on the children.
The Twilight Years. Many people
worry a whole lot about how they
should spend their last days on earth.
The trouble with so many is that they
grow old before they learn what is
good for them. A wise friend of mine
told me his formula for living out one’s
twilight years in happiness and con-
tentment. He found the foliowing to
be important: think well of yourself;
háve something pleasant to do; háve
a desire to be somebody and accom-
plish something; live a clean life; také
an interest in statě, national, and
world affairs.
It doesn’t hurt to live a little in the
past, a whole lot in the present, and
not forget the future. An interest in
good music and books helps — any of
the arts, in fact. A person must ad just
