The Business of Retirement
The seeret of a happy retirement is
to start getting ready for it well in
advance.
WOliK1NG TOGETIIER
This is the unanimous advice of ten
suCcessfully-retired men in a retire-
ment com.munity of more than 10,000
people southeast of Los Angeles, Calif.
The , ten men, interviewed by the
Institute of Life Insurance, represent
a wide variety of income levels and vo-
cational backgrounds. They include a
former retail merchant, office man-
ager, highway engineer, cook in a Vet-
erans Administration liospital, attor-
ney, life insurance agent, labor fore-
man at a Hollywood motion picture
studio , mechanic, telephone tester and
Navy officer.
Aii háve a share in the beauty,
AI! háve a pari in the pian.
Wliiit docs it ni alte r what duty
Falls to the lot of man?
Someone has bíended the plaster,
And someone has carried the stone;
Neither the man nor the master
Ever has builded alone.
Making a roof from the weather,
Or building a house for the King,
Only by working together
Háve men accomplished a thing.
Nině of them reeeive significant in-
come from savings and investments.
As a result, two of them now háve
higher incomes than when they were
ac ti vely working.
Two are un.der 65 years old and do
not yet collect Sociál Security bene-
fits. All the others are over 65, but two
of them are not eligible for Sociál Se-
curity.
All continue to carry at least a mod-
est amount of life insurance to protéct
their wives or cover burial expenses.
All started preparing financially for
retirement during their prime working
years. They ušed virtually every me-
dium of savings and investment, in-
cluding savings accounts in banks and
savings and loan associations, govern-
ment bonds, corporate securities, life
insurance cash values, annuities, reál
■estate mortgage loans.
Most of them developed new in-
terests to help fill their leisure hours
after retirement.
As a result, each of them says he
encountered no serious prOblems in ad-
justmg to retirement.
Their incomes before retirement
ranged from less than $5,000 to more
than $40,000 a year. Haif of them had
earned less than $7,500 a year during
their prime working years. Yet,
through personál savings, employee
pension plans and Sociál Security, all
but two of them are now enjoying re-
tirement incomes of at least $500 a
month.
F.ight of the men and two óf their
wives reeeive pensions from former
employers, ran gin g from $50 to $600 a
month. Their average pension income
is about $240 a month.
Faith
Faith is not an intangible something
as so many people seem to think,
something that is “way above” them,
something that is just involved in “re-
ligion.” Faith is a force we use every
moment of our lives. The degree of
success we can aehieve, and any effort
we make, depends upon how well we
understand the power of faith and the
extent to which we conscientiously put
it to work for us. What good would he
be if he laeked faith in himself, faith
in his company and its product or Serv-
ices, in his policyholdcrs, or in his pros-
pects? Not very much! Faith in these
would be meaningless unless he had
faith in this great country of ours, its
institutions and its future. And for
that he must háve faith in God. Faith
