to the Youths Companion of April

the South will some day be able to

that the Southern farmers will

CAUSE OF TEMPERANCE
The following is from Arthur
Brisbanes remarkable contribu-
tion The fight against alcohol
appearing in the April number of
v
Cosmopolitan
No matter which way he rolls
bis eye tbe deamon Rum sees for-
mer friends deserting territory
torn awav and eager statesmen
rushing to give him vigorous kicks
He has fallen upon dry and evil
days The fatal handwriting to
let is seen on many saloon walls
Tb story of bitter fighting
against alcohol spreads all throu
the nation Even sumarized the
whole story would be too long
Legislators everywhere are joining
in the contest the fight is popular
and gaining daily All religions
and all churches fight the saloon
p Pages might be filled with
the list of prohibition victories
throughout the union Only Eng
land getting her daily list of de
feats during the Boer war can im-
agine how King Alcohol must feel
as the news keeps rolling in
Taxation has fallen upon drink
more heavily than upon any other
of mans necessities pleasures or
vices the tax that would have
been refused on bread even at
risk of life has been paid on drink
willingly The tax on drink rears
hospitals in which drunkards die
and prisons in which they rust It
builds public schools and more
than any other tax helps to sup-
port the government
Count Witte of Russia told this
writer that the Russian govern-
ments monopoly of spirits which
he brought about yields a profit
about equal to the cost of the na
tionalkillingmachine the Rus-
sian army
A nice and appropriate balance
Jails have been filled by drunk-
enness gallows have been erected
to punish the crimes born of drun-
kenness Poorhouses are drunk-
ards homes and every other grave
in the potters field might appro-
priately have a jug for a headstone
Prohibition laws in 1870 affected
three m llions and a half of our
population
Now the figures have grown to
mon than thirtythree millions of
people
Thirtythree millions of Ameri-
can citizenB today live under pro-
hibition Jaws taking chiefly the
form of local option While our
population has been multiplied by
two and a half the number affectd
by prohibition has been multiplied
by ten at that rate enforced tem-
perance for the nation seems not
far off
There is on foot a rebellion ag-
ainst alcohol aB powerfulvindictive
and thoroug as any that ever de-
throned a king of flesh and blood
The brokenhearted women and
children who thought their lot be-
yond hope and their cries Hnhoard
now find whole populations cities
and states coming over to their
side making of their enemy the
common enemy

Why One Eoad Boss Voted Pro
October 12th 1907
W C T U Pr si Reporter
Continued from last week
Farder movver knows when yon
are going to come home with the smelly
stuff on you She goes in the little room
and shuts the door then throws herself
down on her knees an cries and talks
to God most all day When the sun
gets to the tops of the trees she goes to
the door and looks down the road most
every minute for a long time Then
she goes back in the room and talks
some more to God Sometimes I won-
der why God dont just pick you up an
bring you home I know I would if I
could do as big things as He can its so
pitiful Por muvver I wonder if shes
talking to God today
Rest easy Billy I said for Ill never
again bring a foul scent into your home
A pair of bright eyer as Bhiny as any I
ever saw were raised to mine
Giving a glad hurrah he cried
Thenyoare going to vote for the
ladies I know Not so fast young man
I replied keeping my eye on his face
that in a second was all clouded oer
I vote as I please these women had
better be off the streets at home attend
ing to their own affairs they have no
right to be sticking a finger in our pie
Farder my little sister will some
day bo a nice young lady just like Miss
Essie I hope as sweet as can be Now
farder do you want some great big
man like Mr Harry to take her away
from us then let her cry her sweet eyes
out cos he drinks and drinks Miss
Essies muvver cried and begged her
not to marry Mister Harry and his own
muvver begged jut us hard they said
a lot I done forge But she just stood
up brave and straight her eyes a shin-
ing so and said Harry promised me
hed net er drink again and I will mar-
ry him fori believe hell keep his word
When they stood up before the preach
erman mister Harry looked so proud
and good and she so pretty and so
sweet I said way down in my heart
hell never take in his month that old
stuff again that old stuff that makes
him fall down and roll and tumble in
the mud like one old bog And just
two weeks from that night farder you
know some men brought him home all
muddy and dirtier than any dog my
gracious he smelled worse dan two pig-
pens Now farder these women have
to make the homes all nice and clean
and it is these men they are working
for to make them nice and clean and
I do think they have the right to put-
out all the old bad stufi that makc3
their work so hard an makes thea
cry so much When Im s man Ill
vote lor the ladies every time
Then we rode on in silence till we
reached the town Billys lecture Bind-

the old horse took I found a shady
spot and tied old Pete then down the
street we went It was early but down
the street the ladies and the children
came their snowy banners waving and
soft song music filling all the air
I tried my hardest to find lomething
I could sneer at cuss at to drive away
the solemn thoughts Billys talk had
started in my brain Well just below
the court house across the street from
where the W C T TJ ladies had their
organ near the sidewalk and beyond
their coffee booth and tables here I
found a bos and sat me down and
watchedand waited hours for some-
thing to turn np that I might scoff at
but not a thing I found for men wo-
man was out on that big day in all the
glory of womanhood There was no
attempt at tinsel show no flashy tints
and coloringB just women calm fair
and dignified with a halo of puritv and
grace around them I am sure it waB a
heart of stone that lay in the breast of
a man who could look on that crowd
with hate and a full intent to cast bis
vote on the anti side The children
made me think of the angels They
sang and recitedand it was well done too
About twelve they formed for another
march np one street and down another
they sang as they marched and they
k ept good time with tongue and feet
As they passed us Billy cried Farder
theres a little boy bout my size hes
got a banner too whats on it Quick
please before he gets away
Vote for me papa I read Then
Billy raised his eyos to mine and said
Go vote for little sister papa I went
and if Id had a hundred votes theyd
all been cast for the womans cause
As I went back to my box on the
street a young fellow who had passed
and repassed seve ial times and every
time he had said in a verylowtonewith
ft wink of the eye why dont you go
and vote now he sauntered by and
raising his voice said in a sneering way
So for a dinner you sold your man-
hood and voted pro I walked up
clots and stared him square in the eye
as I made reply I lost my manhood
some three years ago in your dram shop
young sir today I made the first step
to regain it Clenching my hand and
raising my voice I cried with a vim
Yes I voted pro and the strength of
this hand and the strength of my heart
if all for the womans cause under-
stand He understood for he slunk
away with a frown on his brow
Billy was not on the box where I had
left him hut I saw him crossing the
street hed been to see tho ladies while
I was away As he came up I said
Why Billy boy here is the lunch that
mother fixed up for you and for me
Yes sir I telled the nice lady we
had something to eat but I did want a
drink so bad Then she gived me a
nice cool drink and put me some cake
