Some of Senator Baileys friends

ry While tbe result waB not as
satisfactory as those hd were ad
Tocating honesty in official life
would have had it yet it demons-
trated one great truth that the
people have shown tbat any man
who is not honest in official life
has much to fear from the honest
voter None but the wildest par-
tisan of Senator Bailey sees any-
thing in the result of the election
to rejoice over That it was cat
ting to the pride of Senator Bailey
any candid man will admit It
proves another great truth that
wrong requires more work to pnj
tect it than right The Jimpl
has contended tbat siftetT
all there was intbaqueBtion rested
on RightrvrWrong Had the peo
pie got this straight in their minds
and eleminated the idea of party
or other ontside issues and dealt
only with the facts as they really
existed then there would have
been no question as to the result
To better illustrate the proposi-
tion is there a father in all TexaB
who would be willing for his son
to occupy the possition of Senator
and use his office to increase his
wealth in the manner as acknowl
edged by Senator Bailey Is ther
a preacher who would advise the
young men of his congregation to
do the same then if not why not
What w do not understand is this
how can any one commend and
endors anything in one they would
not do themselves ihere seems
to be an irreconcilable inconsist-
ency in this tbat some people can-
not comprehend We fully believe
that when tbe heat of this cam-
paign is over and every one has
time to calmnly and carefully con
eider the entire question tney will
way down in their heart have a
feeling tbat they had voted wrong
in sustaining a proposition they
did not approve In admitting as
many have that had Senator Bai-
ley been running for tbe nomina-
tion of Senator they would not
have supported him thus admit-
ting that be had done wrong Sim-
ply because he was Senator they
supported him did not wish to
hurt or ruin his influence He
should have thought of that be
foro he entered into those antang
ling alliances Others claim that
was undemocratic not to support
him then the question comes up
Senator Bailey the democratic
party or are the people the demo-
cratic party All this cuts no ice
the question still remainB has Sen-
ator Bailey done right or wrong
No one of his opponents would de-
prive him of a single honor not

uslike to the rocks It is the one
great elevating factor of life it awa-
kens the intellect fires the im-
agination investing man with
knowledge of the forces of nature
enabling him to Bubdue and make
habitable the world Therefore
children should be enthused with
a love for learning for this is the
only elevating power which can
raise them above the coarser ele
ments of humanity
What should children
Only the consideration of what
required to advance the higher de
velopments mentally morally and
physically of a child twill enable
us to answer this question
They should learn those
which are of the most real worth
that will be most conducive to their
own happiness and the happiness
of those with whom they associate
Learn how to use all their facul-
ties to the greatest advantage to
themselves and others To be equ
ipted for complete living I think
one of the first and most important
things children should learn after
arriving at an age of understand-
ing is the unity of plan and pur-
pose and the harmonious working
of the laws of nature and that back
of this there is a supreme power
the great source of all life the di-
vine author of this wonderful plan
that runs through tbe whole uni-
verse and that they are the mas-
terpieces of this divine workman-
ship Learn that they have a dual
nature a physical materal exist-
ence and tbat in the corporial
form there dwells a principle of
life and immortality and that this
life is but a preparatory place for
another grander and more complete
existence Tbat there is nothing
right but harmony and discord is
all wrong Children should learn
tbat they are weavers at the loom
of life and as silently and swiftly
the shuttle of time flies back and
forth the fabric of their character
is being produced
They should learn the three car-
dinal elements honesty purity
and generosity with their associat-
ed excellencies tbat constitute a
noble character To put them-
selves in anothers place to con-
sider his opinions acts and wants
with a noble fairneBS Tbe love of
things right and just and pure pu-
rity of thought word and act this
is the very essence of moral worth
It is a trite but true saying tbat
Little drops ol water little grains
of Band fill the mighty ocean and
form tbe pleasant land Children
should learn that this rule to what-
ever applied is true Learn that
little habits little Bins little care-
lessness of speech or manner or
temper give tone and color to their
character that they will be judged
and known by tbe little things
they do and say The observation
of these little things is necessary
in even the attainment of a succes
business career In some of
tbe great business enterprises of
large cities no young man is em-
ployed who use slang expressions
Lord Chesterfield said that good
breeding is the result of much good
sense some good nature and a lit
tle self denial for the sake of oth
ers with a view of obtaining the
Bame indulgence from them It
should be the desire of every one
his intercourse with others to
contribute as large as possible to
general fund of happines to
impart as well aB receive pleaaure
Children Bhould learn to adopt the
golden maxim do unto others aB
you would have others do unto
you
Children should learn aesthetic
appreciation that beauty is all
pervading quality that it unfolds
the numberless flowers of Bpring
waves in the branches of trees
and the green blades of grass the
ocean the mountains tne clouds
heavens the stars the rising
setting sun all overflow with
beauty we are encompassed with
on every side The enjoyment
gives is so refined and pure so
to worship that it is painful
think of the many persons liv
the midst of it yet almost blind
it I have spoken only of the
beauty of nature but how much
this mysterious charm is found
the elegant arts
No one re-
ceives the true culture in whom
sensibility to the beautiful is
cherished and an infinite joy
lost to the world
Of all the great lessons that in
terest and concern humanity there
none more important or needs
be studiedmore seriously than
government The little child
whose mind is young and tender
capable of being properly sha is
for the realities of life should
taught early that his
euccess
usefulness depend upon self
eontrol Children who have learn
this le6eon truly are more res-
pectful and obedient to parents
teachers than those who have
learned it
Another very important ksson
learn is to think for on this
power depends success physical
intellectual and moral No per

work Not to think simply on of

The editor of a northern paper
states that a merchant of his town
on being seen recently by a Bolic
itor for a jobprinting establish-
ment made the foreign printing
house drummer feel ashamed of
himself by telling him I believe
in my printing being done at home
We have a good office here the
work is satisfactory and the prices
very reasonable The more money
I spend with my home printer
tbe more money he will have to
spend with me Lesides this it
enables him to employ more help
in his office and the money paid
to these employes will find its way
into the home channel of trade If
I give you an order for printing
it means just that much money
sent out of town Even if you do it
a little cheaper than the homeprin
ter I will have to pay express char-
ges on the work which evens up
matters The home printer lives
among us and helps to keep up our
institutions he is our neighbor
friend and patron therefore I pro-
pose to give him my printing as
long aB I am in business here

is power After the child has ex-
ercised his thinking faculties then
the next work in process is to ex-
press what he has thought This
however isnot separate from think-
ing but rather each is contributory
to tbe other for the more one thinks
the more he will love to express
and the more exercise in expres-
sion tbe better he can think Phys-
ical exercise is necessary to a prop-
er development of the mind as well
aB development of the body the
body will do little toward growth
unless exercise is taken Children
should run and jump and engage
in those useful activities which

the body They should learn the
dignity usefulness healthfulnesB

Carlyle says the latest gospel in
thi3 world is know thy work and
do it And from what source
must come this useful training of
thechildren in all those virtues of
mind and heart that lead to noble
useful manhood and womanhood
From the home the church the
school It should begin in the
home circle and at an early peri-
od of the childs life and too much
importance cannot be laid on tbe
obligation of parental training Pa-
rents too often shirk this duty and
hold the teacher responsible for
the childs mental growth when if
they could realize
the conscien-
tious unselfish efforts of our teach-
ers and the difficulties and obsta-
cles they are often called upon to
surmount they would be more ac-
tive in co operating to secure obe-
dience and deportment The im-
pressions received at school like
those received in the home circle
are often instrumental in shaping
the childs course through life
In Bumming up a fragmentary
thought on this subject we find
that it is not enough to be well in
formed on text book technique
that books are but a means to ac-
complish results and that the work
of the home and church and school
is so interlinked and interdepend
ant one on the other that it is only
by their harmonious cooperation
that our children are trained and
fitted for complete living and tbe
activities of life
