Pirates Kick Off Season
At \hn Alstyne Friday
The Wylie Pirates will travel to
Van Alstyne this Friday night,
September 5th, to play the
opening game of the season.
Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. at the
Van Alstyne Stadium.
Returning for the second year
is Head Coach Jerry Shaffer.
He took over the Class AA
Pirates who have won no
games the previous year and
led them as they won six
games and lost four.
“Our goal is to be as good as a
year ago. Because of the many
new players it is hard to
predict the outcome of this
year. It will depend on the
Senior leadership we have."
commented Coach Shaffer to
The News.
Coach Shaffer further stated
that he feels the team is on
schedule, which is, in part,
due to a strong off season
program. The Pirates have
also not had a dropout since
practice began.
On deck will be nine of the 29
varsity players who did not
play ball last season. Of these,
three are Juniors and six are
Seniors. They are proving out
quite well with the team
counting on them. Of the 29
varsity members, 13 are
Seniors, 12 are Juniors and 4
are Sophomores.
During the two scrimmages of
three games each (Varsity, Jr.
Varsity and Freshman) against
Allen and Princeton, the
Pirates did extremely well.
Shaffer said although he was
encouraged by efforts given,
they did not set out to win but,
rather to use these games as
learning situations.
And learn they have! One spot
being worked on is how to
handle the ball more effec-
tively and consistently. Also,
with the loss of Danny Meeks,
Wylie's All-District Punter last
year, the kicking game needs
more concentration. Prospec-
tive punters for this season
include Darrell Wright, Scott
Pendergrass, Tim Wright.
Mike Hatfield and Jeff Smith.
Twenty five more students are
playing this year than last
year, enabling the Junior
Varsity to have a full ten game
schedule. Their first game will
be September 4th at Pirate
Field here following the 8th
grade game which begins at 6
p.m. Wylie has not had a J.V.
team in many years, if ever.
Other than Head Coach
Shaffer, who will also coach
the backfield, other coaches
will be:
John Wiggins as Offensive
Line Coach, while a new
Coach, Bruce King, will take
over as Defensive Backfield.
Training the Defensive line
will be Rick Page. Charles
Nickell returns as Freshman
Coach.
Named as managers for the
Team are Don Gavin. William
Peavler and Joe Lopez.
Twelve lettermen are re-
turning. They are Gary Foster,
Trent Thomason. Rudy Ro-
well, Jeff Smith, Tom Burris,
David Hirmon. Mike Murphy,
Darrell Wright, Frank Dunlop,
Jay Davis, Don Murphy and
Andy Young.
Weight average of the possible
beginning player for the
Pirates is 161 lbs. with two
weighing over 200 lbs., while
one w ighs in at 197 lbs. The
possible beginning offensive
team will consist of Quarter-
back Jay Davis, Running
Backs Trent Thomason and
Lanny Tyson, Flanker Roy
Fuentes, Left End Rudy
Rowell. Left Tackle Darrell
Wright; Left Guard Tom

Tax Increase Sought
Council Finishes Budget
After many weeks of work, the
Wylie City Council has
•finished their guidelines on a
v roposed 1875-76 budget.
They will consider official
approval of it at the regular
meeting September 9th when
a public hearing is set for both
the budget and a Lone Star
Gas rate hike. The time for the
meeting is 7 p.m.
The Council is proposing that
taxes be raised to $1.25 per
$100.00 evaluation on a 50%
assessed value, making the
effective rate 63 cents per
$100.00. Last year the value
was $1.10 evaluation on 50%
assessed value.
For the past two years the
$1.10 rate has prevailed. In
1973 the tax was lowered from
$1.50 to $1.10. a savings of 40
cents per $100.00 tax
evaluation at 50% assessed
value
Because of the increase of
prices and current inflation,
the City fathers found it
necessary to ask for a tax
increase. Two such inflatio-
nary costs have to do with
gasoline and the power cost at
the sewerage plant. In 1973
gasoline was sold to the City
for 23 vents per gallon. Today
it runs 44 cents per gallon.
Power cost at the sewerage
treatment plant is now running
at $350 plus per month,
compared to the $220. cost of
October, 1974.
At first the Council started at a
figure of $1.30 per hundred tax
rate. After reducing such
areas of the budget as the
police budget, library budget
and administrative budget, the
figures came down, but since
Wylie streets are deterio-
rating. they doubled the
amount of money from last
year's budget on street
maintenance.
The total proposed budget for
this year is $407,534.00 in
comparison to the $371,947.00
figure from last year This is
about a nine per cent overall
increase in needed money for
the city.
The budget will go into effect
October 1. 1975 when tax
statements will be sent out.
Taxes will be delinquent
February 1. 1976
Another added increase will be
for trash collection w hich ;s
added to the water bill each
month Trash pickups will go
from $2.00 per month to $2.’5
per month This figures out to
aboui 34 cents per pickup and
will apply only io residential
customers
