WHS theatre group to perform Christmas play
The West High School The-
atre Department has scheduled
its performance of "The Best
Christmas Pageant Ever" for 7
p.m. today (Thursday) in the
West High School auditorium.
"We've sold over 100 in ad-
vance and tickets are going fast,"
said Tredessa Skeeters, West
High School drama teacher and
director for the play. Tickets are
$3 for adults and students and
$1 for children ages 2-5. Chil-
dren under two-years old are
admitted free. The box office
opens at 6:30 p.m.
Proceeds from the play will go
to the high school theatre de-
partment "to basically help build
the program," Skeeters said. "We
hope to use it to put on some
bigger and better shows in the
future and maybe use it to go see
some out-of-town productions."
A grou p of some 40 area you ng-
sters, mostly West High School
students, will comprise the cast
for the play. "We've been practic-
ing (after school) since the first
week of November," said
Skeeters, who hopes to make this
an annual event.
Skeeters reports the play cen-
ters around the Herdman chil-
dren, described as the worst kids
in school. "One Sunday, the
Herdmans came to church be-
cause they heard that the minis-
ter gave out free desserts. In-
stead of getting a dessert, they
heard about the tryouts for an
upcoming Christmas pageant.
After threatening the other kids,
the Herdmans walk out with the
lead roles in the pageant, much
to the chagrin ofthe congrega-
tion."
"After a disastrous dress re-
hearsal in which the fire trucks
arrived to extinguish the fire and
the entire town was distraught
over the Herdmans and their
antics at church, the whole con-
gregation arrives to see what will
happen next. They discover that
the Herdmans really do under-
stand the significance ofChrist's
birth and that they, because of
their recent understanding and
interpretation, are able to bring
new meaning into an ageless tra-
dition, creating the best Christ-
mas pageant ever," she further
explained.
"This is the first time we have
done any extra-curricular play
other than the UIL one-act play
during the year," the play direc-
tor said. "It's really been a good
experience."
In addition to their Thursday
night performance, the cast plans
to perform the play before an
audience of St. Mary's School,
West Intermediate School and
Connally Junior High School stu-
dents on Thursday morning and
West Elementary School stu-
dents on Friday.
"It will be hectic," Skeeters
said about the schedule, but "it
will give them a taste of what it
will be like to be on stage."

a scene in the West High School Theatre Department's play "The Best Christ-
mas Pageant Ever" set for 7 p.m. Thursday night in the school auditorium.
