Thursday night was a busy
one for the Palacios Volun-
teer Fire Department and the
Palacios Police Department.
The fire department made
three emergency runs to the
hospital and fought a fire that
gutted the home of Shirley
Hansen at 410 Moore.
At 8:32 p.rp. Police Officer
Emmett Greene was in front
of the police station when a
car parked on the north side
of the 400 block of Commerce
Street backed into Fred Harr’s
parked car and took off.
Green set out in pursuit of
the hit and run driver, not
knowing at the time the car
was being stolen.
He followed the car and
thought it was going to stop
when it ran off the road in
front of the Luther Hotel but
as he started to approach the
car the driver speeded up -
then the chase began with red
lights flashing and sirens
blowing,
Greene radioed for assist-
ance and was joined by De-
puty Sheriff Joe Ryan and
Game Warden Mike Urban, in
Ryan’s car, and Mike Maxey
in the other city >olice car.
The chase began with the
cars going east on South Bay
Blvd. around the. Baptist En-
campment, then up and down
First, Second and Third
Streets between Duson and
Welch before turning into the
alley between Commerce and
Duson where the driver of the
stolen car stopped behind a
trailer in Weakley Trailei
Park.
Deputy Ryan approached the
car from the east and Greene
came down the alley from the
west.
The car, a 1970 Plymouth
belonging to Charles Owen
Davis, was driven by Sandra
Stowe. Ms.Stowe was taken to
Bay City by Deputy Ryan and
Urban.
Davis had parked his car in
'.ho 400 block of Commerce,
left his motor running while
he went across the street to
Carter's Loungetogetadrink.
He said he noticed a lady
leaving as he entered but didn’t
pay any attention to her.
A short time later several
in the lounge heard a crash
and ran out to see what had
happened.
Davis, one of those to come
out, noticed his car was gone
and rushed to the police sta-
tion to report it had been
stolen.
Police Chief Jim Wilson
commented that it was very
fortunate that no one was hurt
during the chase as so many
spectators ran out into the
street to see what was hap-
