A Hand In The Desert

Yes. I have just seen a hand in the desert, crying to humanity.
I think it was an Egyptian’s hand because it lay near ™^"brother's hand. It

international borders. That great question to all of us: WHY. OH. GOD. ■
I saw this hand of mine between El Arish and Kantara not far from the Sues
Canal and deep in the Sinai.
It was the only thing left of me and of him.
Who was he? — This unknown and unburied hand?
Did you say he had a family? That he laughed and played with his children an
dreamed one small dream of happiness or many great dreams?
What matter that he was forced into a situation by leaders diseased with power.
What leader has ever forsaken power for humanity?
Let me tell you more about my hand in the dessert, in the Sinai.
After all the stinking bodies at Mitla Pass were cleaned up by special forces who
knew their former possessors were determined to exterminate them; after they were
swept up and property buried at the Golen Heights; after all the Israeli soldiers who
fell at Jerusalem. Banias. Kunetra (and places you’d never guess existed) were
their proper requiem - Yes. after all of the Sinai Desert was swept clean of bodies,
somehow this one lone clutching hand remained as a monument to all of us.
I told you it was somewhere off the highway between Kantara and El Arish. You
never notice it if you passed by at average speed from a car. Certainly never from a
plane which makes the desert all the same like a common denominator.
But something drew me to this overturned military vehicle which had been blasted
into a complete somersault.
It was the something that makes a story.
And it was only the hand that made the story.
Near the hand was part of a foot showing the entire bone with the exception of a
small piece of flesh which giant desert ants were quickly gobbling into extinction.
Oh. the uniform was there and so were some helmets.
There must have been other men. too. Their bodies had long since vanished.
But my man's hand and yours was still there.
His head was nearbye. all his hair was attached. The face was a cavity. Not too
cavernous, though, to let one escape the three distinct bullet holes through the skull.
The breast bones and ribs were all eaten clean. Picked by desert vultures in what
seems as eternity ago and only yesterday or this last minute.
Two empty shoes were close by. One fitted to the shankbone which the ants were
completing. The other was almost alone, waiting in the hard-blowing desert dune.
The other arm was just a bone, so was the hand and the rest of the body.
The only thing left in the desert sands was this well preserved hand, saying some-
thing. clutching the creator of life and death, crying. "Why me. Dear Allah. Dear
Confuscious. Dear God, Dear Anybody. Why Me?"
That's the eternal question.
And though noone will ever know the name of this hand again. Or shake it, or
feel its tender touch as it clutches the Sinai Dunes eight months after all life has left
the body, I think everyone will know the name and the hand.
Because that hand in the desert belongs to you and me.
