Center, Texas, Jan. 11.—
The commissioners court met
Monday and among other mat-
ters of business rescinded the
order for a good roads bond
election in precinct No. 2, and
will now proceed to order an-
other election in that precinct
for the same purpose. The
first order was for $100,000
good road bonds and the next
or new order will be for
$150,000 good road bonds. It
was believed by many citizens
in precinct No. 2, that the
amount of $100,000 was insuf-
ficient and this moved the
court to rescind the order and
make the amount $150,000.

Austin, Texas, Jan. 9.—A
new separate building for the
state highway department will
be necessary because the de-
partment’s road construction
program this year will nearly
double that of . 1927, which
cost about $10,000,000, R. A.
Thompson, state highway en-
gineer, declared . today in a
letter to R. S. Sterling, Hous-
ton, chairman of the' highway
commission.
Mr. Thompson suggested
that the department if neces-
sary could erect, for instance,
a $400,000 building with its
own funds, but said the legis-
lature would be asked at least
to sanction such a step.
The engineer pointed out
that although next year’s
revenue certainly will be no
larger than that of 1927, the
commission at the beginning of
itp term was compelled to take
over about $2,000,000 in debt
left by the previous adminis-
tration and then began 1928
tvith a cash balance of more
than $3,000,000.
Using those facts as basis
he believes the building pro-
gram for next year can be
made double what was accom-
plished this year, without any
reduction in maintenance ex-
penditure.

I BUSINESS SEGTIBN
The stock of merchandise of
F. Ollie B. Johnson was de-
stroyed by fire of underter-
mir.ed origin about 12 o’clock
Sunday night, and the build-
ing owned by Mrs. A. F. Bryan
was badly damaged from the
flames. The stocks of mer-
chandise of J. E. Blankenship
and A. F. Burns, adjoining,
were damaged somewhat by
smoke.
The fire truck made a quick
run when the alarm was turn-
ed in, and the recently organiz-
ed volunteer fire department
did’some splendid work in con-
fining the blaze to the building
bn which it originated. Un-
der the capable direction of
fire chief K. H. Francis, two
hose lines were quickly con-
nected and with good water
pressure a heavy fire loss in
the business section of town
was averted.
The losses are partly pro-
tected with insurance.

Austin, Texas, Jan. 9.—The
highway department today
joined a steadily growing
group which will request the
next legislature irobably over
Governor Moody's disapproval,
to provide for continuation of
the 3c gasoline tax after Sept.
1, date when it is scheduled to
decrease automatically to 2c.
R. A. Thomps n, state high-
way engineer, declared that
he believes the .tax must be
kept at its present level, if road
work is to progress. Counties,
he said, are voting tremendous
bond issues for money which
the state must match if con-
struction is to go forward.
Governor Moody has indi-
cated strongly that he does not
favor perpetuating the tax at
