BIBLE NOTES
By Mark Sloan, Minister, Carthage Church of Christ
When Faith Springs A
Leak
As the blue skies back
dropped the sunny day, John
and Sam were thankful that
time had allowed them to be
fishing on their favorite lake.
For hours, they drifted in their
small row boat, allowing the
winds and the waves to
control their directional fate.
While they were talking about
their lures and baits, they did
not see the tree stump
intermittently breaking through
the surface with the ripples of
the water. They were jolted as
the boat plowed into the jagged
point of the trunk and sprang
a leak. Another day of fishing
became ruined when John and
Sam were forced to bail water,
try to plug the leak, and row
to shore at the same time.
Our lives often mimic a boat
afloat in the waters of this
world. Jesus died to give us
the frame-work of
righteousness, which forms
the frame-work of the boat.
Our faith covers the frame like
the skin on the hull of the boat.
Together, the frame-work of
grace and our bolstered faith
help keep the sin of the world
out of our lives. However,
sometimes our faith springs a
leak and sin gushes through
the gaping hole like water in a
leaky boat.
When sin breaches our
faith, we must have a plan of
what to do. First, we must stop
the hole. Thisr
involves
finding the|
shore ol
God’s carel
and removingl
the boat froml
the water. It*
is nearly Mark Sloan
impossible to
stop sin while submerging
ourselves in the environment
of sin. On the other hand, the
grace of God’s shore affords
us rest and opportunity to
repair and repent and stop the
sin.
Second, we must bail the
sin out of our lives. Confession
acts like a bilge pump (or an
old coffee can) that removes
the water in the boat. Once
the hole in our faith is plugged,
we must remove the sin that
got in. “If we confess our sins,
He is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.” (I John 1:
9). God willingly removes the
sin that would destroy us.
Finally, we must keep our
boat from drifting back onto
the rocks and springing another
leak. We must do this by
securing our moorings onto the
shore of God. Danger comes
when our boats drift aimlessly
into the deep waters of the
world. “Therefore, we must
give more earnest heed to the
things we have heard, lest we
drift away. (Heb. 2: 1).

ing from this service will be
sent to the Heifer Project In-

that information contact
Martha Brennion-Nease at
Tenaha City Hall. Remember
there is also a need for an au-

Timpson Church of Christ
Teachings from the Bible
Dwayne Sowell, minister

Continuing my response to
“Letter to the Editor” dated Jan.
8, 2004.
More on the reason for not
living by the Law; still using
“New Living Translation” Gal.
3:13, But Christ has received
us from the curse of the Law.
When he was hung on the
cross for our wrong doing. For
it is written in the scriptures,
“Cursed is every one hung on
a tree.” 14. Through the work
of Jesus Christ, God has
blessed the Gentiles with the
same blessing he promised to
Abraham, and we Christians
receive the promise of the Holy
Spirit through faith. 15, Dear
brothers and sisters, here is an
example from everyday life.
First as no one can set aside or
amend an irrevocable agree-
ment, so it is in this case. 16.
God gave the promise to
Abraham and his child. And
notice that it doesn’t say the
promise was to his children, as
if it meant many descendants.
But the promise was to his
child - and that, of course,
means Christ. 17. This is what
I am trying to say. The agree-
ment God made with Abraham
could not be cancelled 430
years later when God gave the
Law to Moses. God would be
breaking his promise. 18. For
it the inheritance could be re-
ceived only by keeping the
Law, then it would not be the
result of accepting God’s
promise. 19, Well, then, why
was the Law given? It was
given to show people how
guilty they are. But this system
of law was to last only until the
coming of the Child to whom
God’s promise was made. And
there is this further difference.
God gave his laws to angels to
give to Moses, who was the
mediator between God and the
people. 20, Now a mediator is
needed if two people enter into
an agreement, but God acted
on his own when he made his
promise to Abraham. 21. Well,
then, is there a conflict between
God’s law and God’s promise?
Absolutely Not! If the law
could have given us new life,
we could have been made right
with God by obeying it. 22. But
the scriptures have declared that
we are all prisoners of sin, so
the only way to receive God’s
promise is to believe in Jesus
Christ. 23. Until faith in Christ
was shown to us as the way
of becoming right with God,
we were guarded by the Law.
We were kept in protective
custody, so to speak, until we
could put our faith in the com-
ing Savior. 24. Let me put it
another way. The Law was our
guardian and teacher to lead
until Christ has come, we no
longer need the Law as our
guardian. 26. “So you are all
children of God through Jesus
Christ. 27. And all who have
been united with Christ in bap-
tism have been made like him.
8. There is no longer Jew or
Gentile, slave or free, male or
female. For you are all children
of Abraham. You are his heirs,
and now all the promises God
gave him belong to you.
I hope this has helped in our
understanding concerning
whether we should keep the
Law of Moses, or not. It is my
hope and prayer that is has.
Yes it is sinful to take God’s
Law out of context. As I have
stated, Christmas is a tradition
of man, and not a command of
God. And for man to observe
it as a command of God and
use it in their worship is add-
ing to God’s word. Lets not fill
God’s worship with man’s
ideas. In Eph. 1:22-23 (New
Living translation) Paul says to
the Ephesians Christians: Eph
1:22 “And God has put all
things under the Authority of
Christ, and he gave him this
authority for the benefit of the
Church. 23. And the Church is
his body, it is filled by Christ,
who fills everything every
where with his presence. Also,
in Luke 6:46: “So why do you
call me Lord, when you won’t
obey me””
It is my prayer that all men
will come under the authority
of Christ and be saved. May
God bless our understanding
through study and belief of the
truth...

a pastor, only a brother in
Christ)

a man of action.
