SILAS NEWS
By Nancy Stephens
Good morning. Once again
we are blessed to be here in our
small little rural town where ev-
eryone knows everyone and
there is a smile awaiting for
those you meet! You should
visit with us. Timpson is a great
place to live!
Well folks, thanks for the
phone calls about missing my
article last week. Leave it to this
computer and the wonderful
new technology that we are
plagued with! I am now on a
new DSL line and where to
news went, who knows! I sent
it but apparently it never got to
the paper. Thanks Norma
Flournoy, Rusty Nix, the
Goolsby’s and all the others
who read and missed me this
past week.
Our sincere sympathy is
with the family and friends of
Roy Conway who passed away
on Sunday at his home here in
Timpson. His wife Ann and the
family were there to care for
him these past few months
while he has been so terribly ill.
His sons Eddie and Roy Glen
were here along with his
daughter Cheyanne.
Joy Rhodes sent me an email
and said that her dad James Earl
Rhodes had heart surgery and
was out and home and doing
pretty well. Just takes a long
time to recuperate over this type
of surgery. We are thinking of
you Mr Rhodes and hope you
feel better soon. His wife
Jo Ann was a teacher for my
kids when they were in grade
school.
Attendance at Mt Olive was
smaller than usual with 84
present on Sunday morning.
Lots of folks gone for spring
vacation and some were out
sick. Shirley Fancher had some
surgery this past week and hope
she is feeling better soon.
Rachel and Ashley Hickson
were back in church and
Ashley has become part of the
choir. We are so thankful for
her and her pretty voice. Rachel
is still doing pretty well but we
ask that you continue her in
your prayers at this time.
I have found a wonderful
caregiver to help me some with
Herman. Glenda Faye Earl has
been a blessing to our family
these past few weeks as she
comes and relieves me some so
that I can get out a bit. Thanks
Faye for being so faithful to
help me and for being so good
to Herman. I really appreciate
you and God Bless You Al-
ways.
Emily and I had the pleasure
of attending a surprise Linge-
rie Shower for Courtney Bush
last Thursday night. It was held
at Aunti Pastas is Nacogdoches
and was really a total surprise
for her. She had tears to share
with all of us and we all had a
great time laughing and visit-
ing with her. She was married
on Saturday afternoon to Mat-
thew Workman at First Baptist
Church in Timpson. A beauti-
ful candlelight ceremony
united this couple together.
Roses were everywhere and
from all I hear the reception
was fabulous. I did not get to
attend that part as we had an-
other wedding to attend after
Courtneys. My best to you two
for a happy life together filled
with Gods Richest Blessings
Forever. Always remember to
put God first in your lives. He
is the centerpoint of the mar-
riage triangle.
Saturday night, a host of
friends and family gathered in
our home to join Ann Marie
Garcia and Jamie Ray Barnes
as they exchanged wedding
vows before candlight. There
were around 40 or more guests
who enjoyed the evening. BBQ
was prepared by Bill Jordan,
Emily and I prepared cakes and
all the trimming to make a per-
fect day for this happy couple.
Bro. Clark Strickland per-
formed the double ring cer-
emony with Andy and Emily
sharing their voices as they
sang The Rose. The couple
will make their home in Silas
near her parents Javier and
Linda Garcia. Gods Richest
Blessings to this happy couple
too.
Linda Morgan went to the
visitation for Roy Conway and
saw many friends and visited
with his family while there.
Glen and Linda Hudson an d
Moraan enioved Moreans
week off from school. Morgan
stayed busy as she and Brandi
and Piper Hudman and some
other friends spent one day at
Lufkin at the Zoo and Park.
They had a great time and plan
to go again soon.
Please remember the up-
coming Revival at Mt. Olive
which will begin Easter night
going through the following
Wednesday. Hope to see you
there. Lots of special music is
planned and we look forward
to each one who shares their
talent with us.
Cleona Laviolette visited
with us on Saturday afternoon
for awhile. She is doing well
and enjoys visiting with friends
and family.
My parents KW and Lucille
Decker are doing pretty good.
Just ready for springtime. Mom
is having lots of trouble with
her knee. Just wish there was
something the doctors could do
for her to make it feel better.
Rusty Nix came by for a
short visit one afternoon last
week. He was visiting with his
family for a little while on his
day off from Blue Bell in
Lufkin.
Justin and Rebecca Oliver
came over for a visit on Sun-
day afternoon. Enjoyed seeing
them. Kent Brown and also
James Hervey came by later in
the day. Charles Hughes joined
us for supper on Sunday night.
He had been to see his brother
Bowden Hughes in Center ear-
lier in the day.
Happy Birthday next week
to my dear friend JoAnn
Hairgrove and also to another
dear friend Debra Hughes
Moore. Hope you have a good
one. There will be lots of April
birthdays including Rebecca
Oliver, Jerry Hammers, Valeta
Hudman, myself , my niece
Kristina Swonke in Taylor and
many others too.
I saw Sam and Pam Dillon
at the Bush wedding on Satur-
day. They were doing pretty
good too.
Chelsea Pate spent some
time with her aunt Dorothy
Bailey out in Silas during
Dear Citizen of Timpson and
Surrounding Communities: I am
in my senior year at Stephen F.
Austin State University, studying
Early Childhood—Fourth Grade
Education. This year I had to
choose a project to advocate in
my community. I have chosen to
be an advocate for children’s lit-
eracy. I thought this would be the
perfect project for Timpson since
we are in the process of opening
our city library. Although many
children’s books have already
been donated, there is still a great
need for more. This is where you
the citizen’s of Timpson came in.
I am asking you to try to make
your best effort to donate a
children’s book to the library .
If you are not sure what types
of books to donate, the library
will have a list of quality
children’s books for you to
choose from. Iam also going to
post the list at local businesses
around Timpson. The goal I have
set for this project is to have a
total of fifty children’s books
donated to the library. These
spring break. She really enjoys
going over there. Who
wouldn’t. Dorothy is a wonder-
ful person . She is good to
check on the sick and visit with
everyone when she can. Her
sister Frances Hoover does too.
Orval Miller donated fish for
a fish fry fund raiser for Jessica
Burgin, the daughter of Wayne
and Latricia Burgin. Jessica is
raising money for her school
and also a pageant coming up
in the future. I know he will be
glad when he can get outside
books do not have to be new. The
books can be second hand as long
as they are in good to excellent
condition. It is important for chil-
dren to be exposed to literature
at an early age so they will be suc-
cessful readers. The library re-
quests books to be donated after
April 15, 2004. This gives you
plenty of time to plan or make
management/discipline, assess-
ments and instructional strategies.
Approval was given for the 8th grade
graduation guidelines. The goal is
that by having 8th grade graduation,
students will be motivated to stay in
school and make good grades.
The board also cast vote for Region
7 Board Member. Mr. Dudley
McIntyre was appointed the election
judge for the May 15, 2004 school
trustee election and to allow Mr.
McIntyre to secure election clerks
and early voting clerk.
Business items for discussion in-
cluded a full report of finances. Busi-
ness Manager Janie Rains reported
that 87.70% of local taxes have been
paid to date. She also stated 50% of
the budgeted expenditures have been
made and 57% of the expected rev-
enue has been received. Dr. Moore
commented that it is important to
monitor expenses and revenues to
ensure that expenses are in line with
revenue. He also stated that revenue
is higher than expected and comple-
mented the principals and staff for
their hard work toward improving at-
tendance, which increases revenue.
Also discussed was the Summer
Leadership Institute in San Antonio
on June 10-12 for the school board
trustees. Several of the board mem-
bers will be in attendance. Admin-
istrative reports included a report
from elementary principal Ken
Campbell. Mr. Campbell reported an
enrollment of243 with average daily
attendance of 96.3%. More than 100
parents and community members at-
tended open house at the elementary
school. The second grade will
present a texas History Program on
March 31, in the auditorium at 2:15
pm. Keith Koonce, middle school
principal, reported an enrollment of
142 and a average daily attendance
again and fully recovers from
that knee surgery. Bob and
Judy Crump are fine. Just stay-
ing busy on the farm and Judy
is still working in Garrison.
Glen and Jean Pierce have been
busy keeping great grandkids
during spring break. Imogene
has had them busy helping her
in the yard to pick up limbs and
get ready for spring.
All the news for this week. I
hope this one arrives safely in
the News Office so until next
week..............God Bless!!

up to run for 2 positions in the May
school board election. Stephen
Amos, Calvin Smith Sr., and incum-
bent Tommy Sparks are the three can-

cepting the resignation of Roger

settle insurance claim over water
damage to high school; Approved
Robin Hooper as a long-term substi-
tute teacher; approved 12 week fam-
ily medical leave for Janet Hannah;
approved change in Principal Calvin
Smith, Jr. to make his contract to a
two-year contract and gave him a 3%
pay raise. The vote was 4-2 with
George Duke and Tom Paul
Wedgeworth voting against the mo-
tion; they also approved the 2003 -
2004 contracts of teachers, work
agreements of at will employees and
contracts of JR3 employees.
Tenaha Baseball
The Tenaha Tigers opened
their baseball season at home
against Chireno. This was the
first game of the season for the
Tigers. Tenaha opened the sea-
son with a big win over
Chireno. The Tigers scored 11
runs to Chireno?s 1. Timothy
Roberson was the starting
pitcher for this game and had a
great game on the mound. He
struck out 13 batters in the 6
inning game. The game was
called early due to the 10 run
rule.
The Tigers jumped off with
