Timpson celebrates Memorial Day in the park
By Nancy Alexander
A beautiful day and a
great crowd turned out for
the festivities at the Gazebo
on the square in Timpson.
The program Master of
Ceremonies was Mr. Orval
Miller, District Com-
mander of the American
Legion Post. The program
was sponsored by the
American Legion Post 90
in Timpson and assisted
tremendously by Timpson
ISD.
Mr. Miller thanked the
folks in Timpson and the
administrators of Timpson
ISD for their support of the
program and welcomed all
who were present. The
School band played several
tunes, one of which was a
favorite hymn of most ev-
eryone there, “It is Well
With My Soul”.
Some had lost family
members in the wars
throughout the years and
these were asked to come
forward to be recognized.

mers and Mr. C.T.
Simpson presented a slow
salute to the family mem-
bers of those who were
lost in war.
During the earlier part of
the program, the Memorial
Wreath was placed by Mr.
Jerry Hammers and his
youth assistant T.J.
Magness. Sherri Strahan
sang the “Star Spangled
Banner”. The flat was
raised with the Pledge be-

names of the deceased dur-
ing war time.
Dr. Leland Moore spoke
to the crowd with remind-
ers of what some gave to
ensure our freedom re-
mains our freedoms. He
spoke of the many reasons
we have these programs,
which is to honor those
who made a life sacrifice
for our country.
Mr. Miller made presen-
tations of Appreciation
Plaques to Dr. Moore, who
has been supportive of the
American Legion Post 90
throughout his years as
Superintendent of
Timpson ISD, to Mary

Fannie Watson guest speaker at TAGHS
Ms. Fannie Watson at the TAGHS meeting
By Sandra Brownlow
Timpson’s Genealogical
& Historical Society met
Wednesday, May 20th at the
Genealogy Library. The
guest speaker was Ms
Fannie Watson of Paxton.
She entertained the group
with a large display depict-
ing the old Rural Schools
of the late 19th and early
20th centuries in Shelby
County and with quite a dis-
sertation about activities
such as games, sports, in-
formation about out-
houses, curriculum, teach-
ers, discipline methods, at-
tire and the list goes on.
Very funny!
The display shown at
the meeting is only part of
the items she has collected
or made. The entire set-up
is currently housed at the
Museum in Center, Texas.
She invited everyone to go
over to the Museum to
view this display when in
Center.
We appreciate her for
many reasons and this
work is just one more.
Fannie says she has not
started on a book, only on
the research.
We all encouraged her
to write the book - we
want a book, not just for
our genealogy library, but
also many of us would like
a personal copy. This pro-
gram and many others have
been videoed and are on
DVD’s in the library. Cop-
ies are available for $10
each. Please call in ad-
vance 254-3500, for a
copy so that we may have
it ready for you when you
come in.
Timpson Chamber says Frontier Day is set to go!
By Florence Reeh
The Timpson Chamber
of Commerce met Thurs-
day, May 21 at the Public
Library on Bremond for a
regular meeting.
Attending were Pres.
Mike Thrift, Vice Pres.
Keith Brownlow, Marilyn
Corder, Don and Joann
Burrows, Jerry and Patty
Woods, Elmer Ray Rob-
erts, Jeff Crews and Flo-
rence Reeh.
A report on the status
of the Walk of Reflection
was given by Marilyn
Corder. She reported that
the layout was progressing
steadily and showed one ot
the finished bricks with the
name of the “In Honor Of’
person printed. She also
told the group that 144
bricks have been printed
and she had many persons
wanting to have bricks. We
will begin taking orders for
the next step, but will need
100 more to get started be-
cause of the cost of hav-
ing the bricks printed and
shipped. There will be a
place set up for those
wanting to order bricks on
Frontier Day or orders will
be taken at the Chamber
Office on Bremond Street.
As for parking space
for the booths, the layout
will be in the center of the
park on each side of the
gazebo and there will be
plenty of parking space.
A discussion of the pos-
sibility of a web site for the
chamber was discussed in
depth and it was an-
nounced that a Web Site
reprsentative would visit
the next chamber meeting
and make a presentation
concerning this.
Membership was men-
tioned and several names
were noted as prospective
members.
Frontier Day 2009 was
next and it was noted that
the Pony Express Rider
was not able to make the
ride to different towns an-
nouncing the Frontier Day.
A probable rider will be
searched for. The Cake
Auction, the Porta Potties,
Car Show, Floats, Dunk-
ing Booth, Sound Equip-
ment, Singers, Band, Pet
Show were all discussed
and an agreement was
made to set these things in
order.
The annual Sonny
Tippett Gospel Singing is
set for July 2
Tenaha’s Kara Partin, Cameron Choice, and Fran Partin. Cameron
received the Coach Clark Partin Memorial Scholarship.
