Benefits of PEDC’s partnership with SLP
BY BRANDI G. WEST
Palacios Beacon
Matagorda County Economic Development
Corporation (MCEDC) and PEDC Executive
Director, Mike Strotheide submitted his monthly
activity report at last weeks’ PEDC meeting.
Reaping the advantages with Site Location Partners
(SLP), Strotheide reported on having attended the
Chicago Fab-Tech tradeshow, ‘one of the largest
trade shows in the country.’
According to Strotheide, there were 40,667
attendees with 1563 exhibitors and fewer than 9
economic development corporations represented.
The result was 18 companies looking for expansion
or re-location that have received a follow-up letter
from Strotheide. Overall, Strotheide thought it was
a very good show and anticipates meetings in Dallas
to make more contacts with SLP in the near future.
The next tradeshow is scheduled in February
and will be in Anaheim, California. The industry
the tradeshow will feature is plastic and would be,
according to Strotheide, good to attend; especially
due to Palacios ’ proximity to other plastic producing
plants.
Maintaining ‘in code’ Strotheide informed the
PEDC Directors about a prospect entity ‘Project
Balistics ’ which is a group of investors in the firearm/
holster manufacturing industry along with an outdoor/
indoor shooting range with the need of 50 acres and
to eventually need an additional 150 more acres.
This prospective investor would initially hire 150
employees with the possibility of creating altogether
500 jobs. Ideally, as Strotheide stated, that is after
with speaking to City Manager David Kocurek, the
airport industrial area would be contending acreage
for ‘Project Balistics.’
Strotheide also mentioned perhaps the creation of
a private/public partnership for use of the shooting
range and having sent along with the proposal a letter
of support from Matagorda County Sheriff Frank
‘Skipper’ Osborne.
Regardingthe MCEDC’s Annual Meeting, Debbie
Morris, Port Director and MCEDC board president,
commended Strotheide and Seed Stock Mediafor the
production of the video played at the Annual Meeting.
“It is another one of the innovative ways that
MCEDC is creating excitement in our community
regarding the county’s assets and potential for future
