Notes

User Feedback: "Date of photograph: Best guess; some time between 1895, when the father and son team of John R. Putnam and Arion Putnam started calling themselves Putnam Commercial Photographers, and 1901. However, it might have been taken as early 1891 when John started photographing in Los Angeles. The penciled number on the back is a "stock number." It is unclear if the numbering system started with the Putnams before they partnered with Carlton O. Valentine in 1901 to form Putnam & Valentine, or started with Putnam & Valentine. Either way photographs with stock numbers less than about 1,200 mark photographs the Putnams brought with them into the Putnam & Valentine partnership. As the print is marked "Putnam & Valentine" it could have been made any time between 1901 and 1920 when the partnership dissolved. After the partnership dissolved, Arion continued to operate as "Putnam Studios" which lasted until his son death in 1955."
