May wins national award for succeeding despite learning disabilities

Mikaela May believes prepara-
tion is the key to success. It shows
in the honors she has received as
a star member of the Crowley FFA
and in the way she fights through
several learning disabilities.
The Crowley High School ju-
nior’s spirit and accomplishments
have been recognized nationally,
as May is one of two recipients in
the extracurricular activities cat-
egory of the 2011 Yes I Can Award
from the Council for Exceptional
Children.
She will be honored at the an-
nual Yes I Can award ceremony
April 27 in National Harbor, Md.
“To be honest, I was surprised,”
May said about receiving the
honor. “This is a national award.
I didn’t think I would be selected
from the hundreds of applications
that they receive, especially since
the Council for Exceptional Chil-
dren only selects two winners in
the extracurricular activities cat-
egory.”
May was diagnosed with her
learning disabilities, including

Walmart
Replat passes
despite protest
By DAVE SORTER
crowleystar@thestargroup. com
Walmart easily won Crowley City
Council approval last Thursday for a
replat that reorients the planned super-
center to face more toward FM 1187.
Nearby residents, however, used the
public hearing and public input por-
tions of the meeting to express their
displeasure about the communication
to residents concerning the project.
The new plat repositions the
147,695-square-foot building and re-
duced the number of lots used from
eight to six and adds some easements,
according to Chris Biggers of Dunaway
and Associates, the civil engineers
working with Walmart on its Crowley
store, planned for the triangle where
Main Street splits off from FM 1187 in
the eastern part of town.
“The orientation of the building
moved, which dominoed into utility
easements being moved,” Biggers said.
“This is really to just clean up the lot
lines and easements throughout the
property.”
The council voted 5-0 to approve
the replat. Mayor Billy Davis and Coun-
cilman Jerry Beck did not attend the
meeting.
A ground-breaking ceremony could
take place in mid- to late May or early

Crowley ISD art students from grades
7-12, from beginning art classes in middle
school to advanced placement courses in
the high schools, will have the chance to
show off their work next week at the third
annual Crowley ISD Secondary Art Show
at the Crowley Public Library.
The show opens from 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
Tuesday, April 19, with a “greeting recep-
tion” slated for 4:30-7:30 p.m. Crowley
High School art teacher Virginia Sey-
mour, who is coordinating the show for
the third consecutive year, hopes turnout
for the reception will improve.
“I was a little disappointed last year in
the number of students and parents that
showed up at the reception.” Seymour
said.
The show will also be open in the li-
brary’s Founders Room during library
hours the rest of next week — noon-5
p.m. Wednesday, April 20; 10 a.m.-5
p.m. Thursday, April 21; noon-5 p.m. Fri-
day, April 22; and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Satur-
day, April 23. Admission is free.
Art media to be represented include
drawing, painting, print-making, sculp-
ture, ceramics and possibly photography
or digital arts, Seymour said. Students
from other programs, such as interior de-
sign and fashion illustration, also will be
