letter from Capt Lydon I havo
been greatly pleased to rend these

request I return herewith
1 presume that you havo recaiv
ed my circular letter in reference
to the present status of Jefferson
navigation I have worked yery
hard on this matter and I am ex-
tremely disappointed because Capt
Wooten haB reported that in his
opinion the commercial returns
will not justify the expenditure
We will have a final hearing on
this subject on Feb 14 and w4e
will then endeavor to show that
his opinion is incorrect Wishing
you a prosperous and happy year
and assuring you of my constant
friendship and admiration I am
Sincerely your friend

and Capt M B Lydon in charge
of Government boats and dredge
boat here we allways had naviga
tion and allways got appropriation
and I think above named was the
best friends in the engineers de-
partment Jefferson ever had
I cant see where Capt Wootten
got his information from that the
commercial interest did not justify
the expenditure here certainly did
not get it from our citizens and
must come from the railway com-
pany I wish Capt Wootten would
tell us how many thousand bales of
cotton were shipped in one year by
boat also rate of freight and what
vrailroads charged If Capt Woot
ten cant answer above I will for
him knowing all about rates and
boats that came to Jefferson since
1857 Have written to Hon Mor-
ris Sheppard and also give full ex-
planations about steamboats and
rateB of freight
