Tillman in his speech before the sen
ate today speaking on personal privt
lege and defending himself against
the charges brought by the president
connecting him with the Oiegon land
deals emphatically denied the presi-
dents charges and accused the piesi
dent of being actuated m making the
charges by personal malice He also
included the sins of misrepresenta
tion falsification cowaidice and con-
tempt of the senate in his charges
against the chief executive He also
accuses the president of violating the
law in using secret service men and
openly insinuated that the secret ser
vice men stole his private papers He
denied that he had used any efforts
to deceive any one in his dealings or
that ho resoited to falsehood but de
clared that he had a right to try and
buy the lands in question B sald
that in ghing the charges to tn <
newspapers before they were recei

senate He insisted that the presi-
dent had all of this information last
July and saw no reason now why he
should be in such a hurry to make It
public at this time He questioned
the presidents motive and its hon
esty
that he tried to buy the land and in
sisted that he had a right to buy it
He said he signed no papers and paid
no money and denied that he had any
personal interest in seeking to expose
the alleged land swindlers He ac-
cused the president of protecting Har
rlman in holding two million acres of
land he refused to sell at any price
