Banquet, assemblies
scheduled at OHS
A trio of events will take
place this week at Olney
High School.
The annual Academic
Awards assembly will be
held at 1:30 p.m. Thurs-
day, May 19, in the audi-
torium.
The FFA Banquet is
scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Thursday, May 19, at the
Civic Center.
Senior Day will begin at
1:30 p.m. Friday, May 20,
at the audito rium.
Send-off planned
for baseball team
A send-off for the Ol-
ney Cubs baseball team,
which will be playing in
the regional quarterfinal
round versus Archer City
at Graham, will be held at
3:45 p.m. Friday, May 20.
The team will be escorted
out of town down Main
Street to the west Every-
one is asked to come out
to Main Street, wear red
and be loud in support of
the Cubs. The team plays
at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m.
Saturday, May 21. A third
game will follow the sec-
ond if it is needed.
Teams needed for
softball tournament
IntegraCare for a Cure,
a Young County Relay for
life team, will sponsor a
co-ed softball tournament
to benefit American Can-
cer Society-Relay for Life.
This two-day event begins
at 6 p.m. Friday, June 3,
and continues at 9 a.m.
Saturday, June 4, at Olney
Softball field. Concessions
will be provided, with all
proceeds going to ACS.
Entry fee is $100 per team.
Only 10 players per team
(5 males, 5 females), lb
register, call Stacy Wade

is Friday, June 3.

Four elected to
local positions
Votes cast in the local
election on Saturday, May
14, have been tallied and
winners of three at-large
positions on the Olney
City Council and two posts
on the Olney ISD Board
of Trustees have been an-
nounced.
A total of 1,022 votes
were cast in the City Coun-
cil election, with 748 com-
ing early, 273 cast on elec-
tion day and one ballot by
mail.
Samantha Purdy led the
pack with 311 votes, in-
cluding 224 early and 86
on election day. Jake Bailey
was next with 281 votes,
including 208 early and 73
on election day.
The third spot will
be filled by Marshall
Leemann, who had 163
early votes and 60 election
day votes for a total of 223.
Incumbent Stacey Heard
was fourth with 124 total
votes, including 97 early
and 27 on election day.
Tommy Kimbro had 56
early votes and 27 election
day votes for a total of 83.
Purdy, Bailey and
Leemann will join the Ol-
ney City Council at its next
meeting on Monday, May
23.
For the OISD Board of
Trustees, Kyle Hinson de-
feated Jeff Hilton and Al-
vin Cardenas for Place 6.
Incumbent Steve Ste-
phens did not run for re-
election.
Hinson had 165 early
votes and 57 votes on elec-
tion day for a total of 223.
Hilton received 169 votes,

FRIDAY FIRE- Olney
Volunteer Fire De-
partment responded
to reports of a fire at
Averett Lumber Co.
at 6:10 p.m. Friday,
May 13. Callers re-
ported seeing flames
and smoke coming
from a metal build-
ing located behind
the main store. The
building was home
to a shop as well as
a storage area. The
fire reportedly started
in the storage area,
and destroyed the
contents of the shop.
There were no injuries
reported. Olney FMS
and Olney Police De-
partment responded to
the blaze, along' with
the OVFD.

Wheeler resigns +-
as chief of OPD

Chief Steven Wheeler of
the Olney Police Departs
ment abruptly resigned his
position with the OPD on
Thesday, May 17.
His resignation is effective
Friday, May 20.
City Administrator Danny
Parker confirmed the resig-
nation Wednesday, May 18.
“He putin his resignation.
He is leaving to take a posi-
tion with Slaton Police De-
partment as a lieutenant,”
Parker said. “He’ll be earn-
ing more money and will be
closer to his family.”
Wheeler joined the departs
ment at the end of Novem-
ber 2010. He came to Olney
after working as an officer
with the Abilene Christian
Univ ersity p o lice d e p art-
ment.
Wheeler was a detective
for 11/ 2 years in Slaton be-
fore going to ACU.
Wheeler had previously
been chief in New Deal for
two years, and for six years
prior to that was a canine
officer in the same city.
Parker said the City Coun-
cil will probably accept
Wheeler’s resignation at its

The fourth annual BBQ
Cook-Off to benefit Ron-
nie’s Kids, a charity organi-
zation founded in memory
of the late Ronnie Stroud,
was held Friday and Satur-
day, May 6-7, at Tom Griffin
Park. Winners were chosen
by a panel of judges in cat-
egories for beans, chicken,
ribs and brisket.
Grand Champion was
Four Crows BBQ. Morrison
Supply won Reserve Cham-
pion honors, and Team
Pride (Head Letus) won
Second Reserve Champion.
