Family and friends assembled at the ordination were
encouraged by Bishop Gracida to support and pray for
the newly ordained in this time of preparation and to
help them to conform and train them as priests.
“This is a new beginning,” said Bishop Gracida,”
and we look forward to their return when they will be

Nuevo Laredo diocese
has many needs
By Msgr. Robert E. Freeman

The date was May 25, the feast of St. Gregory VII,
-Iso known as Hildebrand, the Benedictine monk who
helped organize the Church as Europe came out of the
Dark Ages in the 11th century. So it was quite appropri-
ate that on that date Bishop Rene H. Gracida went to
Nuevo Laredo to present a check for $49,137.34 to help
Bishop Ricardo Watty Urquidi organize the newly cre-
ated Diocese of Nuevo Laredo. Half of the money came
from a collection taken up in the Diocese of Corpus
Christi on March 10 and 11; the other half came from a
promise made by Bishop Gracida to match whatever
was taken up in the collection.
Bishop Gracida is quite interested in providing help to
the new diocese across the border. He once had to
organize the Diocese ofPensacola/Tallahassee from the
ground up and he knows the many difficulties involved.
There are many ways in which the people of the
Corpus Christi diocese can help the Church in Nuevo
Laredo. Within a month the Diocesan Telecommunica-
tions Center in Corpus Christi will be providing a two-
week seminar in communications for fee seminarians
and laity of the Nuevo Laredo diocese. Religious pro-
gramming is not allowed in Mexico; i.'owcver, rhe radio
signal from KHOY-FM in Laredo co\ ers a large part of
the Diocese of Nuevo Laredo. Fo - sam e time now priests
and laity from across the border nave been featured in
programs on the station.
Catholic Social Services has been sc ding food, cloth-
ing and other articles across the borncr for years. This
month a food pantry is being organized in Our Lady of
Mount Carmel Parish in Nuevo Laredo. Poxanna Guerra,
director of Catholic Social Services in lairedo . plans to
help supply food for this pantry.
A team from the Corpus Chri ti diocese visitc 1 Our
Lady of Mourn Carmel Parish this past week.
