•beet the clipping is taken from—
ytt at the suggestion of Prof. Nash,
an ardent supporter of both Bailey
and Davidson, we cheerfully give
space to the article and certainly
would not be averse to seeing our
fellow townsman governor of Texas
though to be perfectly frank, as we
always try to be, we regard Col-
quitt as the pick of the bunch so
far mentioned:
"Senator Quintus Watson of Lee
county, blonde, plump and cherubic
in lightest linens and Panama, was
in Houston Tuesday and Wednes-
day carrying a side line of political
Information.
The senator is au ardent advo-
cate of the nomination of A. B.
Davidson for governor next year.
"The lieutenant governor" said
Senator Watson, "is the only anti-
Bailey man in Texas that a major-
ity of the Bailey men will support
in the primary. He is, moreover,
the only anti-prohibitionist that
can win. If the antis divide their
vote between several candidates, I
shall send my respects to Governor
Johnson.
"You think Cone Johnson can
win under those circumstances?”
"A. 1$. Davidson is tbe only man
who can beat him."
. ^How about the attorney gen-
eral?"
"If A. B. runs he will certainly
beat both R. V. Davidson and
Lightfoot, too. Lightfoot in his
race for attorney general will have
the full strength of tbe attorney
general, if the attorney general
does not ran for governor. But if
they both run they’ll both looe.”
"Why are the Bailey men in fa-
vor of the lieutenant governor, an
anti-Bailey man?” ^
"Because they know that Bailey
owns A. B. Davidson an apology
for die speech he made before the
legU|ptare after his re-election."
"The Bailey leaders appear to
feel that the senator erred, doing
the lieutenant governor an injus-
tice, when he savagely assailed all
his opponents, including the lien-
tenant governor. Apparently they
have reached the point where they
can realize that a man might op-
pose Senator Bailey’s course in
connection with the oil trnst with-
out basing tbe opposition upon
personal grounds;' without being
animated by malice. And it seems
they now regard tbe lieutenant
governor as among those who,
entertaining no personal malice
against Senator Bailey, took the
stand that he did solely upon con-
scientious grounds. Moreover,
they have long since admitted that
the lieutenant governor exercised
^scrupulous fairness in appointing
«the senate members of tbe Bailey
investigating committee, and in all
-of his official acts throughout that
affair. Further^the lieutenant gov-
;er4orf while be yielded to no man
\n kis condemnation of the doc-
trine known as Baileyism, did oot
carry bis condemnation of the
senator to the limit that some
others-Carried it."
