During this time last
year the city was grieving
and in shock over the tragic
news surrounding the
deaths of Coppell Mayor
Jayne Peters and her
daughter Corinne.
One year later, through
professionalism and in-
tegrity, the city has been
able to move past the inci-
dent as it looks toward the
future.
Last July, during a reg-
ularly scheduled city coun-
cil meeting, council
members became con-
cerned after Peters did not
attend. Shortly thereafter,

The city of Coppell was shocked by the deaths of Jayne Peters
and her daughter. A year later, members of the community look

police investigated her
home to find the bodies of
Peters and her daughter; it
was later determined by
police that Peters had shot
her daughter and then
turned the gun on herself.
Coppell Mayor Doug
Stover described the event
as the greatest tragedy the
city had ever experienced.
“No one will forget that
day,” Stover said. “I am
proud of how our commu-
nity responded. Our coun-
cil, our staff, our citizens
and our faith community
all grieved over the loss,
but everyone pulled to-
gether to support one an-
other and move forward.”
Since the deaths, the
city of Coppell has come to-
gether and grown. During
the mayor’s “State of the
City Address” held earlier
this year, Stover raved how
the city was continuing to
move forward and grow
even with the recent state
of the economy.
Still, the council remem-
bers the challenges they
faced following the incident
and take pride in how they
dealt with the situation.
“The Coppell City Coun-
cil persevered and was out-
standing during this crisis.
They lost their mayor, but
like our staff they never
skipped a beat in serving
our citizens,” Stover said.
“Then Mayor Pro Tern Bob
Mahalik did a splendid job
stepping up to the plate
and serving as mayor for
four months. I was proud
too that they did not judge
or criticize or try to cast
themselves as victims or
feed the very sensational-
ized coverage by some
media outlets. Today we
are a strong and vibrant
council with unwavering
dedication to the commu-
nity.”
Coppell City Manager
Clay Phillips agrees.
Phillips said he feels that
the council has grown
stronger and closer since
the deaths of the two
women and have always
done what is best for the
community.
“As I have told others,
your mettle is tested dur-
ing tough times,” Phillips
said. “We were able to pull
together both as an organi-
zation and a community. I
believe we are an even
closer community today.”
While the deaths of Pe-
ters and her daughter will
never be forgotten, the city
continues to move forward
and hopes to continue proj-
ects and city improvements
to make Coppell a safe, at-
tractive city that people
want to live in.
“Compassion was and is
abundant in our city and it
reinforced for all of us the
importance of not just
reaching out to offer help,
but to also reach out to ask
for help,” Stover said. “I am
very proud of this commu-
nity.”
OPINION
How is self-love any different
from having a big ego?
A generation or two
ago, when people bragged
on themselves, most all of
us looked at them kind of
funny. Funny as in, who
the heck do you think you
are! And that thought was
not a question, either, but a
thought of disgust. These
days, especially among
celebrities, including some
that excel in sports, it is so
common that we have come
to expect it. Just look at
actor Alec Baldwin this
week concerning his “enti-
tled” actions on the Ameri-
can Airline flight!
One of the more outra-
geous of these characters
was the egotistical, over
the top individual that a
few years ago played for
the Dallas Cowboys, as well
as other teams prior and
since. I am speaking of the
estimable Terrell Owens,
who once said on national
TV, “Everybody knows who
TO is!” At another time he
was quoted, or perhaps
said on TV, “I love me some
me!” One of my more subtle
responses to hearing his
state-
ment
was,
“Good
grief!” I
had
some
others
that
can’t be
printed,
as did
many of
my friends. To me it seems
this guy is so taken with
his importance that he is
almost romantically in love
with himself! And I don’t
necessarily qualify roman-
tic love as real love anyway,
as it is often as shallow as
casual water on a golf
course. People of this ilk
often have no real sub-
stance, and we would never
have heard of them except
that nature blessed them
with one singular prodi-
gious talent.
Am I for self-love? Yeah,
I think so, but since I think
it is very difficult to even
love others without some
element of respect for
them, how about we just
call it self-respect, and turn
down the volume on this
need to proclaim loudly our
self-love. Kind of like if you
have to brag about your
self-love, maybe you really
ain’t so sure about it any-
way. Similar to those that
seem to have the need to
proclaim to others about
how creative they are, per-
haps they really aren’t all
that creative. These are self
assessments, along with
some others, that we would
do well to just zip it and let
others make about us!
I have great respect for
the individuals that I pro-
claim to love the most,
specifically my wife and

children, as well as most of
my relatives, and I also in-
clude in this category many
friends as well as counsel-
ing clients. I will do just
about anything I possibly
can for these people to nur-
ture their welfare and
growth. So, it would follow
then, that my “self-love”
would be to grant myself
the same respect. Said an-
other way, if I don’t take
care of my welfare and
growth also, I am not loving
myself very much or giving
myself proper self-respect.
And on some occasions, this
means saying, “No.”
Like most normal peo-
ple, I have certainly at
times over the years felt
quite disgusted with myself
for being selfish and rude,
as well as some decisions
that I have made that were
impetuous, impulsive and
immature. However, I like
to think that since I don’t
tend to “beat up” others for
their similar errors, I don’t
have much need to beat up
myself as well. I subscribe
to the poet Alexander
Pope’s dictum, “To err is
human, to forgive, divine.”
I think it is respectful to
ourselves if we give our-
selves the same respect —
and attitude of forgiveness
we give others. I suppose
that means I even have to
forgive the above charac-
ters for their pomposity!
Dangit!
