Washington City, July 28th,1846
Sir,
The undersigned senators and representatives of the state of Texas in the Congress
of the United States, respectfully beg to present and urge the claims of Mr. John F.
Stephens to an appointment as the Purser in the.Navy of the U. States. Mr. Stephens has
long been favorably known to all of us, and to some of us for a period of seven or eight
years, during which time he has supported a character for capacity, diligence and fidelity
in the discharge of his duties as Purser in the Navy of the late Republic of Texas, which
office he held for a period of eight years previous to the annexation of Texas in February
last. We would also bear testimony to the exemplary character of Mr. S. as an officer and
gentleman.
