It is needless to say more than
that *1 wag born and reared In the
123rd Judicial District I wish to
serve, have spent a substantial por-
tion of my life in each county of the
District, and by that very fact, am
a port and parcel of your kind and
stripe. Furthermore, .1 now approach
the ninth year of nty law practice,
have served Shelby County twice as
County Attorney, I know the condi-
tions and needs of the people, artd
am amply qualified to serve the peo-
ple well as their District Attorney.
In view of the peril of wa/~which
overshadow us all. and the many
duties falling upon me as I try to
do my part, it will be difficult for
me to see every voter, yet. I shall
endeavor personally to see everyone
of you and present you with my
claims to the office. In the meantime,
I appeal to all of you. whether you
voted for me before or not. to take
up ni.v banner and help me. I appre-
ciate that splendid vote accorded me
two years ago in your county—It was
an inspiration to try again, and I

COUNTY EXCEEDS RED CROSS
QUOTA BY $500 DOLLARS
RESOLUTIONS
AND
RAMBLINGS
Original Emergency Quota
Set At $2800 For Panola
No one ever regarded the first of
January with Indifference. A new
year is upon us. with uew duties,
new conflicts, nejv trials, and new op-
portunities. What eYer the past year
may have meant to you. make It dead
history. But let the new year be a
living Issue. With a big, fresh sponge,
dripping with the clear water of for-
giveness. wipe clean the slate of
your heart. Enter the year with a
kind thought for every one. You
need not kiss the hand that smote
you, but grasp It in cordial good feel-
ing, and let the electrictiy of your
own resolves find Its connecting cur-
rent which very often txists where
we think It not. Make the new year
a happy one in your home; be bright
ttf'dtftpasltfmi; carry yoir cYYe* eas-
ily let your heart be as sunshine
and yotir life will give warmth to
all around you.
Always when your writer thinks
of new resolutions and the tiew year
we think of friendships automatical-
ly. EMERSON wrote this line: /’A
friend may well be. reckoned the
niasterpiece of nature.” It Is right
for us to always oblige a friend for
the way to have n friend is to be
one. Yet, it is equally true that a
man or woman who would use you t,jj”
is no genuine friend.. This business1
of friendship works two ways. We
have always cherished everyone we
ever had with the exception of those
who blew hot and then cold. Such
people are har-lly worthy of the
title of friend. JOHN L. STODDARD
wrott one of the finest poems we
have ever read on friendship. For
what Its worth and for the real lesson
It teaches we .wish to re-print it
here on this new years day.
County chairman Herman V. Jacobs
and E. 0. Clabaugh, county treas-
urer for the special emergency Red
Cross drive announced this week that
a total of $3361.00 had been raised in
the recent campaign.
Panola county got its original
quota of $2800 about ten days ago,
nnd immediately Mrs, John C. Brown,
permanent Red Cross Chairman called
a meeting of county leaders. At that
meeting Jacobs, local banker was
named county chairman and he In
turn organized the drive and ap-
pointed committees which worked
laboriously for the success of the
undertaking. Most of the money was
raised in two days time. All of the
funds have not been reported yet and
the grand figure of better than thirty-
three hundred dollars muat still be
considered as incomplete.
By topping the quota by five hun-
dred dollars the leader* in the comi-
ty have indeed accomplished .a fine
Job In short lime. It waa the meet
money ever raised -for a -worthy cause
in this county In Its history.

‘Tis not in the bitterest woes of life
The love of friends, as a rul-J.
grows cold:
Still less dots it melt in the heat
of strife.
Or die from the canker of borrow
ed gold.
For pity comes, when they see us
. grieved.
Or forced to lie on a couch of pain.
And a hasty word is soon retrived.
And the loan of money may leave
no stain.
'Tis oftenest lost through the dead-
ly blight
Of society's pestilential air.
Which blackens the- robe of purest
white,
And fouls what once was sweet
and 'fair.
An euvious woman's whispered
word,
A dander born of j» cruel sjile.
The repetition of something heard.
Tie Imputation of something vile.
Or possibly even a fancied slight
For a feast declined, or a call de-
layed.
Or Jealousy caused by petty spite.
Or the wish for a higher social
grade.
t
'Tis one. or all of these combined.
That saps the love of our dearest
friends.
And slowly poisons heart and mind,
Till the Joy of generous friendship
ends.
IaMt night they were in a cordial
• mood.

The blood bank gives to the clinic
one of the latest discoveries In the
field of modern medicine. To explain
what the bank nutans and how it fun-
ctions in laymen's language—it slm-
plely serves as a storage vault for
blood to be used In the treatment of
tat tents who require transfusions. It
is not necessary to obtain the exact
type of blood to supply a transfusion.
The Blood is stored in dry or powder-
ed form.
