Nature preserve topics spark much debate
Council talks Turkey again
By DORIS NEWMAN
The Monitor Staff
It was another out-of-the-ordinary
Mineola City Council workshop Thurs-
day with several people attending and
speaking out, sometimes passionately,
on several things that pertain to the
Mineola Nature Preserve on the Sabine
River.
The first subject was a revisit of the
Turkey Hill Shooting Club moving
to the site where the old wastewater
ponds were filled in near the preserve.
Ward 2 Alderman Jack Jones, a mem-
ber of the shooting club, said he be-
came aware the owner of the property
which the club leases was interested in
selling the property two months ago
and he broached the subject to fellow
council members. They asked him to
bring a presentation back to them.
"It was basically my idea because I
felt like it rounded out what you can
do at the preserve," Jones began. "You

Something old,
something new
make up January
chamber meeting
By DORIS NEWMAN
The Monitor Staff
The January Mineola
Chamber of Commerce
meeting on Wednesday
at the chamber office was
an ending and a begin-
ning as it was the last
meeting under Jason
Ray's presidency and the
first board meeting for
the new manager, Mari-
anne Eubanks.
Loy Frazier will step
in as the president effec-
tive Feb. 1. Ray also in-
troduced the new board
members who will be
Demethrius Boyd, Ken
Johnson, Sue Jones and
Susan Resnik.
Ray said there were 8
to 10 people who came
forward and were will-
ing to serve as chamber
directors. "That really
says something," he said
gratefully.
Ray also pointed out
that the manager search
committee had found
more than 20 applicants
for the manager posi-
tion. "We had a very
good search committee,"
he said. They conducted
numerous interviews
and did background
checks on the top three
applicants for the job in
the process of hiring Eu-
banks.
He also noted his term
consisted of nine more
days at that point.
One of the items on the
agenda was "old busi-
ness." Resnik, former
substitute manager, said
there was something she
wanted to say. "After
nine months of hustle
and bustle the chamber
should be real proud.
Guys, we're ready to sail.
Every day we need to be
proud because of where
we've been and where
we are now. And we've
got to keep it going."

Moments into the regular scheduled school board
meeting Monday night, Mineola Board President
Regan Brandon presented a plaque to Head Football
Coach Joe Drennon for being the Class 3A, Division
I state runner up. Football players in attendance
included Austin Anderson, Michael Drennon, Cam-
eron Sorenson, Bailey Gully and Ian Thompson.
Coach Drennon said, "I really appreciate this.
There is nothing better than a coach being able to
watch kids grow. They were unbelievable and
played great football but they are even better kids.
Hopefully we can do it again next year."
Shortly after Mineola Superintendent John Fuller
reminded those in attendance that the month of Jan-
uary is School Board Recognition Month and said,
"You are the leaders that have helped bring success
here and I thank you all."
A video made by Mineola Middle School stu-
dents was presented as well as another from the
students of Mineola High School which included,
