Sheriff Mace returned from
Temple Tuesday evening where
he took the woman Erna Shern-
berg who is charged with throw-
ing her infant from the train near
Ogle, Friday night. The identi-
fication at that end of the line
was complete in every respect,
though the woman gave a differ-
ent name at Temple to the one
she now wears. Constable T. W.
Benton was with Mr. Mace dur-
ing the entire time search was
being made for the woman and
was a valuable helper. The ex-
aming trial will be held at Lo-
meta, as Justice McGuyer has
c harge of the case, but just when
the trial will be held is not known.

Don’t forget to come to the
stallion and colt show next Mon-
day. At that time' the various
stallion owners will exhibit their
horses and samples of their colts,
thereby enabling prospective
breeders to select the type of
horse suiting their individual
needs, and make their own
arrangements accordingly. The
judging of the colts will take
place at 1 p. m. Immediately
after this the owners of light
harness horses will give speed
exhibitions at the race track.
At 2:30 “The Oregon” will give
an exhibition half-mile trot with-
out weights, hobbles, boots or
driver. - This will be a free exhi-
bition and every one is invited to
attend. d40-w!5
Business Men Meet.
A meeting of business men was
held at the office of W. B. Abney
Tuesday afternoon, the first ob-
ject being the consideration of a
letter which had been received in
regard to building a road from
San Antonio direct to Fort Worth,
to pass through Lampasas and.
Marble Falls.
This matter was discussed at
some length, and a proper reply
was framed to the writer of the
letter, who seems rather enthu-
siastic in regard to the proposi-
tion. There has been consider-
able railroad talk through the
newspapers about a north and
south line through this section,
and it is the consensus of opinion
among the business men here
that the road can be secured for
Lampasas if it passes anywhere
near this place.
Further discussion was made
about an oil proposition present-
ed by J. H. Price, upon whose
land west of here oil of good
quality has recently been found
in a well which he is having dug
for water. An expert has visited
this field and his reports are fa-
vorable, his prediction being that
oil in abundant quantity should
be found at depths ranging from
150 to 1500 feet below the surface.
It is probable, however, that Mr.
Price will organize a company
and make one or more test wells
in the vicinity where the oil was
struck in the well which he has
been digging for water.
Further discussion was made
of the silica which exists so
abundantly on the lands of Mr.
Price and others, but it is known
that there is nothing to be made
of this unless natural gas or oil
in sufficient quantity to make the
fuel necessary to reduce this
mineral to a marketable shape.
That there is sufficient silica near
Lampasas to supply the glass de-
mands of the universe, there
seems little doubt, and the only
question of its availability is the
matter of proper fuel to bring it
to marketable condition.
In the meantime the business
men of Lampasas will keep their
eyes open to every opportunity
for the advancement and up-
building of the place and the de-
velopment of the surrounding-
country. Let all take hold and
something of value to us will
soon show up.

fire Department meeting
The fire alarm was sounded
this morning at 9 o’clock, and
the department made a quick run
to the residence of Andy,Williams,
arriving in time to save his home
from incineration, though he lost
his bed and other valuables from
the flames.

purchased the Polsgrove grocery

Determination to Have Great Barbecue,
Parade and Speaking on the
Annual Holiday, April 21.
The Lampasas Fire Depart-
ment held,an important meeting
Tuesday night, at which it was
determined to claim Firemen’s
Day as their own and to make it
the greatest in the history of
Lampasas. The day will fall on
Wednesday this year and it has
already been determined that the
entire day will be devoted to
pleasure and that business will
be suspended by a closing of all
the houses where goods and chat-
tels are kept for sale. In fact it
is desired to make this the one
great day in the history of cele-
brations for Lampasas.
W. P. Darby, C. D. Stokes and
Herman Hoffmann were appoint-
ed as a committee to solicit funds
to defray the necessary expenses
of a band, speakers, barbecued
meats, breads, pickles, coffee, the
arranging of stands, seats, etc.,
and they will also insist that
every business house which can
afford to do so join in the parade
and make a trades display in the
way of adding to the entertain-
ment of the day.
Country people will be invited
for miles around, and it is now
the purpose to have a free din-
ner of barbecue for all who will
attend. Stockmen will probably
donate a part of the meats, and
others will furnish all that may
be necessary to make the dinner
a success.
Now there should be no minc-
ing, no delay, no holding back
in this matter. Every individual
should give the effort hearty sub-
stantial and “moral support.”
The firemen belong to the city;
they do their work without com-
pensation, or hope of reward;
they reduce the insurance rates
in the city to the minimum; they
are always ready, day or night,
to answer the call to save lives
or property, and they should be
honored by the citizenship of
Lampasas with all they ask for
in the way of assistance to make
this celebration the suoccess it
should be.

ly welcomed into the society.

crushed strawberries, cake and
lemonade.
The next meeting will be held
at the home of Mrs. S. J. Smith
when each member will con-
tribute a dollar earned by herself
during the coming two weeks,
and will tell in rhyme how same
was made.

Antonio arrived here Tuesday,

house. Mr. Woodward will preach
