Hunter senior vice president
of the university won the ACU
hill area precincts by 1269 votes
and won District 79 by 1743
votes to retain his position in the
House.
He previously defeated
Holmes by 162 votes in an
August special election called
after the resignation of Rep.
Gary Thompson. HowevaywJth
the student vote back in town.
Hunter's margin of victory in-
creased as he won 53.7 percent
of the more than 23000 votes
cast in the election.
Tuesday's first voting tallies
gave Hunter a 10 percent edge
over Holmes but the gap closed
to six percent after 9 pan.
Holmes did not draw closer aad
a phoae call from Hohaes to the
Hunter headquarters at 10:24
p.m. confirmed the Republican'
expectatieBS.
.. ."Pr. Hunter coagramla-..
tians" HebstM Hid. "You
whipped ase good."
Hunter attributed hk success
in the regular election to hk re-
cord in the two speckl sessions
where be stood firm to hk com-
mitraent of voting against a tax
increase.
"I was able I think by my ac-
tions in the two special sessions
to show the people of Abilene
that I definitely stood for specific
issues" said Hunter. "It's very
important to voters to know that
they can depend on the word of
someone like myself."
He said Taylor Couaty voters
tradkiooaUy Democratic haw
deterakttd that party alkaace k
aet a factor wesa k ceases to
choosing between conservative
aad liberal views.
"I thiak they

aad they wanted a conservative
caadMate" Huater asM. "I'm
just glad I'm their choice."
Throughout the second cam-
palga Huater said he had to clar-
ify the differences between
himself and Holmes who
adopted the slogan of a "Com-
mon Sense Democrat."
Hunter presented these dif-
ferences to the voters by con-
tinually stating Holmes' views
were liberal ana that he favored
the "tax and spend tax and
spend tax and spend" philosphy
ofbig government.
Hunter on the other hand
told voters he preferred to make
further budget cuts before ad-
ding new taxes to solve the
estimated $5 billion state deficit.
"I think it k apparent that
thk tkae more people knew the
difference between my candidacy
aad Hoboes'" said Huater.
"We had a great deal of support
by the psepk who kaew us bast
.aad.wcjust had to get out aad-
ase asorc people."
Apparently the student vote
which was Boa-exkteat durktg
the summer election knew
Huater best.
"I'm delighted that all the stu-
dents from McMurry Hardia-
Simaiefls aad ACU cacae hack
because that made a tremeadeua
difference" said Hunter. "In
fact there were students from
McMurry and Hardin-Simmons
helping me in a very big way."
But it was the hill area vote
that gave Hunter hk buffer he
lost the HSU precinct.

A new ruling by the university ad-
ministration will require students to
have satisfactory Chapel attendance
in addition to a 2.0 grade point
average before they can participate
in Sing Song thk year said Jeff
Nelson.
Nelson director of University
Events said the adminktration has
made thk "the year of crackdown"
on academic standing and Chapel
participation.
Jeaaette Lipford voice iactructor
and vocal coach for Sing Soag said
she thought the reason behiad
tougher regulations was sake sure
that academics came first in the spr-
ing semester rather than extracur-
ricular activities.
"Thk k being done so we don't
have so many academic casualties
from Sing Song as we have had in
the past" said Lipford.
Nelson said while the faculty k
fully supporting Sing Song they
will not accept participation in the
event as an excuse for late assign-
ments and other signs of academic
laziness.
Kris Fanning senior public rela-
tions major from Stephenville and
co-director for Sing Song said she
thought the new Chapel ruling
would affect particktion' in Sing
Song.
"This k the first year Siggies
have only had 100 members
because that's all we were allowed
to take" said Fanning. "So if any
of our girl are disqualified because
of grades or Chapel we'll have less
