Welch writes short story for magazine
By KEITH SCOGGINS
Optlmlat staff
"The Missing Saint" a short story
written by Dr. Jack Welch professor
of English is featured in the fust
edition oi Lighthouse Magazine.
The story describes what happens
when an English professor at a
West Texas university sets out to
look for one of his ex-students who
is reported missing Welch said.
Welch describes the missing per-
son as one who had everything go
ing for him. The professor spends
his extra time investigating the
disappearance and finds out that he
ran away because he was frustrated
about the world's imperfections and
he thought nothing could be done
to help no matter how he tried.
Welch said the reason he wrote
the story is because he is worried
about some of the disappearances in
the Church lately. "When you hear
something like that it makes you
wonder what the motivation was for
leaving and makes you want tq ex
plore it" said Welch.
The story is closely related to
Welch's life because it involves an
Easterner moving to Texas.
Lighthouse is a new publication
and Welch said he likes it because it
does not deal with doctrine but
with basic beliefs such as sin grace
and forgiveness.
Welch said he found out about
the new magazine through another
professor. He had already submit-
ted a story to Towns West Magazine
which changed its name to Scenes
Magazine. The magazine went out
of business without returning
Welch's story.
He wrote the story for Lighthouse
while waiting for his other story
"Good Soldiers" to return.

"Teaching techniques are im-
proving all over not only in
Texas' Manis said. "High school
SAT scores are not improving as
rapidly as we would like. These ses-
sions help us to evaluate our classes
as well a see what other
aredeiaf."

science majors at ACU have b
