Delta Theta defeated defending champion
D.J.'s 13-0 Tuesday in the women's Division I
intramural football championship game.
Soth teams had trouble moving the ball in
k first half possibly because of the cold
weather and stiff winds blowing into Abilene
Tuesday afternoon.
Delta Theta began to move the ball in the
third quarter. One of the key plays of the game
came on a fourth down when D.T. elected to go
for the first down. The gamble paid off as the
team picked up a first down to keep its drive
alive. D.T. quarterback Kelli Kelsoe found key
receiver Tonya Rodgers open down the middle
to put them ahead 6-0.
Delta Theta used a strong defense to keep
f D.J.'s offense from compiling any type of

Sub T-1G used big plays to defeat a tough
Galaxy team 34-28 in overtime to win the in-
tramural football championship game
Tuesday.
"I think it was the most exciting final game
we have had especially with this crowd" said
Burt Ferguson assistant director of in-
tramural sports. '
More than 400 students came to the game
despite the wind and the cold weather at
Elmer Gray Stadium.
Before the game Eric Howard of Sub T-16
said the weather wouldn't affect him. "Three-
fourths of our team is made up of seniors"
said Howard. "This is the last intramural
game for some of our guys. Besides this is a
grudge match; they were the only ones that
beat us during the regular season."
Sub T-16 started the scoring with a pass
from quarterback Don Witt to receiver Alan
Thomas who made a diving catch for the
touchdown. John Howard caught Witt's pass
for the two-point conversion making the score
8-0.
The score remained that way until Robert
Beasley threw a touchdown pass to receiver
Scotty Elston cutting the Sub T-16 lead to 8-6.
On the next series of downs Sub T-16 scored
again on an amazing one-handed catch by
Thomas. The ball was tipped by two Galaxy
players but Thomas kept his eye on the ball
and fell into the end zone.
Larry Borger and Frito Roctter led the Sub
T pass rush continually forcing Beasley to
hurry his passes resulting in incomplete
passes. The defense held Galaxy scoreless
until the final minute of the first half. Daryl
Zeller caught a fourth-down pass from
Beasley in the end zone for the score.
Sub T led 14-12 with 22 seconds left in the
first half. Quarterback Witt took over and led
the Subbers down the field completing three
straight passes. John Wilson found a hole in
the Galaxy secondary and gathered in Witt's
pass to put Sub T up 20-12 at half time.
first play of the fourth quarter resulted in
another touchdown.
Again it was the combination of Kelsoe-
Rodgers scoring for Delta Theta. Rodgers
caught the hall at midfield and outran the
D.J.'s defenders to give Delta Theta a 13-0
lead.
Time ran out on the D.J.'s as their bid to
defend the championship proved un-
successful and the game ended with the score
13-0.
This was the first loss for the D.J.'s football
team in two years. Both Delta Theta and
D.J.'s were undefeated coming into the season
finale.
The D.J.'s are known for their winning
seasons in intramural sports. Last year they
won every women's intramural sport except
for bowling.
"You have to lose sometimes when you
play" said D.J.'s captain Ann Brown. "They
had a better-coached team and deserved to
win" she said.
At the beginning of the second half Sub T-16
after going through a victory line like those at
the Wildcat games started exactly where it
left off with Witt throwing a 55-yard bomb to
Wilson for a touchdown. Witt threw to Thomas
for the two-point conversion.
With their teammates urging them on
members of Galaxy put together a drive that
ended when Zeller ran in from two yards out
for the score. Zeller then caught Beasley's
pass for the conversion to cut the Sub T lead to
eight.
Elston intercepted a pass from Witt at Sub
T's 20-yard line and ran it to the 10. Beasley
found David Green in the middle of the end
zone for the touchdown. Green caught a short
pass and dove into the end zone for the con-
version. The final seconds of regulation time ran out
with the score 28-28. Intramural director Lynn
Luttrell decided after conferring with both
captains to use sudden death overtime to
determine the outcome. The first team to
score would be the winner.
Sub T won the toss and elected to take the
strong wind instead of the ball. Galaxy took
the kickoff and made a quick first down but
was unable to move the ball and had to punt.
Witt picked up a first down with a short run
on the first play and a penalty gave the
Subbers five more yards on the second play.
On the third play of that series Witt threw his
first and only pass in the overtime. Wilson
broke free and caught a perfect pass from Witt
for the 60-yard winning touchdown.
The win was one that the senior-dominated
team had worked for all season. "I have
waited so long for this" said Sub T quar-
terback Witt.
The Galaxy players were good sports about
the tough loss congratulating the winners
while at the same time knowing they had
played a good game. "Everyone kept their
heads and nobody gave up" said Galaxy team
captain Zeller. "
'it was the best game I've ever seen" said
Luttrell.
D.J. Laurie Cross looks for the ball as Delta
Theta defender Alice Brimmer closes in.
