Beauchamp to receive
alumni recognition award
ByBRENOAZOBRIST
Feature Editor
To anyone associated with ACU the man
with the familiar squint-eyed smile is
easily recognized as Garvin Beauchamp
'vlefcprcsldentforstlident services. '
But many ACU students still call him
"Dcdn Beauchamp" just as their parents
did a generation ago. Even though he
hasn't been dean of students since 1969 he
has many of the same duties' that he
performed as dean from 1956 until 1969.
For those who attended ACU in the early
'50s he's "Coach Beauchamp." As head
football coach he led the Wildcats to their
only undefeated season in the history of the
school.
To many he's simply "Beach" the name
he was called when he was a student at
ACU from 1937 to 1941. But whether you
call him "Dean" "Coach" or "Beach"
few people have Impacted the lives of ACU
students as much he has.
"His influence stretches over so mojiy
generations of students and In so many
capacities" Alumni Association president
Dean Owen said recently.
Because of his many years of ex-
ceptional service to ACU Garvin
Beauchamp will receive the Exceptional
Recognition Award during Homecoming
Chapel said Gwynneth Curtis director of
alumni activities. The Chapel service will
be at be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Moody
Coliseum.
Owen will present the award on bclialf of
the Alumni Association. Beauchamp's son.

The Exceptional Recognition Award
which was established In 197G-77 by the
Alumni Board Is the highest honor that
group gives to a member of the ACU
faculty staff or administration. Curtis
said the award is given only "when the
board feels someone has performed
exemplary service that merits special
honor."
The Alumni Board decided at its spring
retreat to present the award to
Beauchamp said Curtis. "There was on
overwhelming feeling that Dean
Beauchamp Is such a tremendous person."
he said adding that Beauchamp has an
"ability to convey a depth of love to
students ex-students and everyone he
comes in contact with."
Beauchamp's friendliness exemplified
by his ever-present smile and twinkling
eyes has touched three generations of
students at ACU. "I don't know of a man
who is more loved and cherished by more
of our alumni than is Dean Beauchamp"
said Owen.
